DixieFan -- read ANYTHING and EVERYTHING you can find by MARK TWAIN aka Samuel Clemens . . . read his "essays" and travelogues . . . he was the most thoughtful and profound commenatator on the human conddition . . .and such humor!!!!! . . . i saw Hal Holbrook do his "Mark Twain Tonight" . . . once on television many years ago and then live . . . he became Mark Twain! . . . i think he's retired from doing it now . . . but wow . . . what an experience it was to see him!
but reading Twain is pure magic . . i prefer his essays to his novels . . . but it's all great stuff!

"The World Without Us" by Alan Weisman. Is this in any way connected to the tv series? Saw bits and pieces, the part about Chernobyl......

just another thought: if Mark Twain were to be re-born as a singer/songwriter . . . he'd have been Roger Miller!

Currently reading "finding Serenity", when I have time. Last thing I read, other than the Dominos Pizza menu, was "What Would Buffy Do?".
Most of my reading is just internet stuff. My youngest granddaughter is the reader in the family, her Christmas list is always a long list of books she wants.

I like the fact that you're all 'readers'! The Dixie Chicks have intelligent fans I see At the moment, I'm reading Death du jour by Kathy Reichs. Well I'm actually reading the Dutch version Fatale Dag, but that's more or less the same

I just bought Atonement by Ian McEwan I haven't seen the movie yet---hi my name is Emily and I have an addiction to buying books LOL! Good movie, regardless of the nominations. Very moving, so I'd expect the book to be one where you need a tissue-box beside you! I'm waiting for the winter to be over before tackling JRRT's "Children of Hurin"

I am currently reading "RAJ - the Making and Unmaking of British India" by Lawrence James. It has a lot to do with the fact that I spent three marvelous weeks in Rajasthan back in April 06 and wanted to learn more about the British involvement in India. The book is written by a real expert on the relevant issues...
... and I am planning to start volume 7 of the stories of the famous wizard boy any time soon having just finished listening to volume 6 on CDs...

i'm re-reading "PADRE PIO: THE TRUE STORY" by Bernard Ruffin . . . and extraordinary account of an extraordinary man of faith and prayer . . . and written by a "non-catholic" which gives an outsider's view (quite positive and said to be the most accurate account) of a man who as a "Catholic Phenomenon", and still remian one even since he died in 1968 . . .

"Robert Kennedy In His Own Words (The Unpublished Recollections Of The Kennedy years)" with forewaord by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.
and:
"Robert Kennedy: A Memoir" by Jack Newfield
and:
"To Seek A Newer World" by Robert F. Kennedy
these are all books i have read long ago . . . but decided to re-visit . . . because although much has changed since the 1960's and 1968 . . . many of Bobby Kennedy's thoughts and philosophical approaches of encountering the issues of the day remain the most insightful even for "the now" . . . as i read his words . . . and read about him . . . one realizes once again just how much was stolen from our lives by his assassination in 1968 . . . so, while it "is' a looking back into the past to some degree to re-read these books (and some others), it also speaks to today . . . and tomorrow . . .
