Am I the only one who thinks that Martie can't sing lead? I mean, she's fine on harmony... but, live, when she takes lead... she's shaky and off pitch. It is ear-piercing. Am I the only one who thinks this??? Emily, on the other hand, sounds fine.

You're not the only one. It's pretty obvious. She's improved quite a bit though. Live it's a whole different story. I give her credit for going out there and doing it.

I think her voice is quite pretty! Different strokes, though, I guess.

I'll be honest...I'm still waiting for my CYH cd to arrive. But I thought her voice was weak on the song she sang on the 1st album so I'm looking forward to hearing her on the new album....if it arrives!! LOL!

I was just making sure I just wasn't too judgmental. In their concert videos, Emily handles herself great. Martie, however, just seems like she doesn't want to be singing lead... and the tremble in her voice is very noticeable.

Love the pic Coop! I haven't seen any others from Austin. (Hint hint) I thought I was the only one who thought she sounded nervous and shaky. I give her credit for trying! Definitely outside of her comfort zone.

On another listen, it does sound like her voice sounds a bit shaky/nervous. I don't think it sounds awful though. Good for her for getting outside of her comfort zone - as we all, the good stuff happens outside of your comfort zone.

I'm not sure what it is, but I'm beginning to like Amelita more and more. There are actually some decent songs on this CD. The Hounds are never gonna be the blue grass enthusiasts that I had hoped, but I actually like this album. I guess I just had to give up on them having a Dixie Chicks sound and accept what they were putting out. It's really not bad at all. :-)

I honestly don't recall Martie struggling at the show I just seen. Maybe I need Dee to doublecheck me on that. From the front row she was darn cute, singing Guy Like You.

Or perhaps she was. We were wearing the same shirt -not blouse- shirt...prior to the show. And then I had it front row....I think that relieved tension for her.

There was one song she sang on the album and it was like WAYY OOFF pitch, I can't believe they didn't re-record it. Can't remember the song though, but it was like a screak (spellcheck)...LOL
And first album was a lot better than this one, why they even named it Amelita I don't know....also Martie sang Gracefully a lot better because it was cut out for her, she doesn't need to hit high notes because they are not for her (or Emily).

speaking of brutal honesty...
perhaps one of the reasons the 2 girls aren't doing great as they use to as far as touring and numbers goes (the only reason I care is because not making money would make it hard for them to do a lot of touring) is because they write their own music? they are getting better and better at writing, but would it hurt if they did professional songwriter's songs? or got together with a big name writer again like with Dan Wilson?
their style rocks, though!

I'm just surprised at the difference. 61,000 vs. 5,000 . . . . that is a lot of disappointed people.

I think she sounds ok. I don't think either one of them really have the power or dynamics to be lead, which is why I miss Nat so much. The 3 of them together is magic, but separate is just bland.

I'm just surprised at the difference. 61,000 vs. 5,000 . . . . that is a lot of disappointed people. Or, a lot of people who just aren't in the know. But if they're "disappointed", you'd have to pin that on the 1st album really. How any of about 5 songs from this new album can't get radio play is, to me, a real discredit to radio stations. Because they're good.

I don't think a Youtube video is the best evaluation of Martie's talent. They always sound distorted to me. When she sang on the live chats I enjoyed it but I don't think her voice is strong enough to sing lead. That's probably why she's only sang lead twice.

I think Emily has really stepped up as of late. She seems like a lead singer now. With the first album, she seemed and sounded unsure. Not really anymore.

So, into this weekend, I broke out the old Dixie Chicks albums. I'm talking pre-Natalie....Particularly Lil Ol Cowlgirl, arguably the best and most diverse of the originals. This was to help give me a lil more perspective of Martie's and Emily's place in music, now and in the past, and, just to enjoy some neat songs they did then. And that's just it. There are some nice tunes the original Dixie Chicks put up back then that never hit radio, if at all. Some really good ones too! Their boundaries for success anyhow lied strictly in Nashville or Austin back then. But either way what got them recognition eventually, and the fate to pick up Natalie via musical acquaintances to Lloyd Maines, was their slew of opener performances for other big name acts of the time. Of course one would think nowadays their Dixie Chicks history could do all or most the promotion work for them, but it doesn't. It seems like it may again take some big name acts on tour, or, as has been abundantly mentioned, radio play, to get them -the Hounds, or Natalie- back to popularity with their new efforts. Even though some good songs are already there waiting to be heard! So that's the revelation I was reminded after running Cowgirl a couple more times in the player.
