The Court Yard Hounds were back Tuesday night (January 18) with another web chat, answering fans' questions live online. Sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Robison talked for nearly 40 minutes about everything from reality shows, Toby Keith, and playing on Steve Martin's new album to a new super-secret project with Natalie Maines.
Fans are still wondering about Natalie and her current employment status, which the girls quickly cleared up. "She is being a mom and, no, she is not giving up the music business," Emily explained. "We are actually going to go to Los Angeles this week to work on a top-secret project with her tomorrow."
"It's a musical project," Martie added.
Later, the duo were asked if their music could be heard in any upcoming movies or TV shows, to which Emily replied: "That's part of why we're going to L.A. tomorrow, but we can't say why or what show."
Next, Emily was asked if she's considered releasing a solo album of banjo tunes. "I haven't had that itch yet," she admitted. "But, we did just get to play on Steve Martin's new banjo/bluegrass album that is coming out in March or April. That was huge for me because I'm a huge fan of Steve Martin but the fact that we got to be on the album was pretty cool. In the studio he brought out all his banjos and let me play on them. It was a great banjo nerd/banjo nerd moment."
Then came the real kicker, would you ever be on a reality show? "No, I have no desire," Emily said. "I did find it very fascinating to watch 'Skating With the Stars' ... I had to put the covers over my eyes because it was so embarrassing to watch."
"I would never go on 'Dancing With the Stars,' because I'm not the greatest dancer in the world," Martie added. "But when I watch 'The Apprentice' sometimes I'm like, 'I could do that task.' The only reason I would not do that is that I could never call people for money and on that show you have to be willing to call people for money."
Another question pointed out one of the newer songs that Emily had written, asking the inspiration behind it. "'Then Again' is an amalgamation of different people I've know through relationships, or just growing up with or have observed in my life," Emily admitted. "I put them all in one person and went with experiences and stories that I've had in my head for the last few years and made this one person ... It's more introspective, how I wish had spoken up."
As for new music, fans are going to have to wait just a bit longer. "We are going to be, hopefully, releasing something dare I say this spring, this summer," Emily said. "We are in the studio right now working on it."
The special treat of the night came during their performance, which owing to Martie's chest cold, had to be instrumental. The sisters were joined by special guest, Irish import and Martie's husband Gareth Maguire, whom the duo have "been talking about finding a way to showcase" on the album.
Before signing off, Emily had a bit of a rant and asked fans to go listen to Toby Keith's latest single ['Bullets In the Gun'] and Robert Earl Keen's 'The Road Goes On Forever' to discern whether or not they sound the same. You be the judge.
-----------
Also a small mention on the 9531 forum ( wich was linked to the article above) of the Toby Keith comment
Emily Robison called Toby Keith out in Tuesday’s webchat for the similarities between his song “Bullets In the Gun” and Robert Earl Keen‘s “The Road Goes On Forever.”

There are alot of artists that use the same lyrics, chords and other musical arrangments. They could share the same sound engineer or producer. Why does it matter to Emily anyway? No offense to her but I dont see how it concerns her. She is only giving promotion to Toby, whom she obviously does not like. She is telling people to listen to his music. Whats the point in that?

The question about the banjo album was mine. I'm glad that Emily answered it.

I think it matters to Emily because REK is a friend (who owns the next door ranch to her children's inheritance at Bandera.) He defended the Chicks publicly in 2003, and they have covered another of his songs, "Merry Christmas From the Family". Emily is probably keener to give REK the promotion, and make sure his song is not overlooked by the Mainstream audience. The songs do share some similarity in story line, but they're not identical - the main similarity is in style and sub-genre. I've no problem with Toby branching out in this way, and I've speculated on his possible reasons in the webchat thread. The main problem is that he may find the Red Dirt audience a very hard sell. They see REK as one of their heroes, and Toby as one of the much disliked Mainstream. Remember there is no love lost between many supporters of the two wings of Country Music. One of the comments I saw on You Tube sums up that attitude: "WTF has Toby Keith got to do with Country Music anyway?"

^That's my guess The only other "music" tv show I can think of is "American Idol". I doubt it's AI though. On the other hand, maybe Days of Our Lives took my advice on twitter and is having them on as a special guest, lol. Doubtful, but I would love it ;D

And the top secret project is.....according to THE BOOT..... The Court Yard Hounds are headed to Los Angeles for a top-secret musical project with their old Dixie Chicks pal, Natalie Maines. I've found out from my own top-secret source (I like to call him "Shallow Throat") that they're recording a bluegrass cover of Cee Lo Green's hit song, 'F--- You,' with Toby Keith making a cameo in the song's video. (Robert Earl Keen is reportedly producing the song.) www.theboot.com/2011/01/22/country-music-jokes-humor/

Thank you! ;D They did that amazing cover of "Hey Soul Sister" this summer, I wonder if that has something to do with it? Or, you know, Adrian is now on "Castle"...so maybe something with the show or ABC? They could possibly be writing a theme for a new show coming up next fall?

Ha! Thanks Nancy! Maybe Emily's TK comment and reference to REK was a veiled hint. I absolutely love that Cee Lo song. Although at my house we listen to the clean version.

I am kind of unhappy that Emily chose to say that about Toby Keith on the Live Chat.... after reading some of the comments on the Boot article about it.... I just think they are going to lose fans... it has 5 pages (almost 6) of comments. 75% of them are bashing the Chicks and the Court Yard Hounds, which is nothing new. I recently read the article too... about Cee Lo Green saying he should have won Record of the Year at the Grammys. That is quite obnoxious and he must think very highly of himself to make a public statement like that. I would have loved, however, for Kanye to run on the stage during the Chicks' acceptance speech because I'm sure Natalie would have had words to say. Lol

I'm of the opinion that they should just brush it off. Those who are bashing them probably never liked them to begin with, dating all the way back to Nat's comments about "Courtesy Of The Red, White, And Blue" in 2002. They really shouldn't care about what anyone says. Besides, as far as I'm concerned, Toby Keith is really quite unimportant in the big scheme of things in terms of music, patriotism, and politics.

I do agree with you, erik, for the most part. They shouldn't care what the haters think or say. Truth be told... Toby Keith's newest album.... hasn't sold much better than the CYH and it is played on the radio everyday. I don't know the exact numbers... just what Billboard says. I can't stand to read uneducated comments from people saying The Chicks' career is over. They should research before they type hateful, untrue, and unintelligent paragraphs slamming artists they dislike due to political differences.

I'm afraid it all goes back to how we reacted when we saw 3,000+ being annihilated on 9/11. I think it bought out the worst in some people, those who thought it their "patriotic duty" (like Mr. Keith) to slam those who didn't agree verbatim with their views. And in the end, the only thing all this proves is that this kind of "patriotism" really is, as the old saying goes, the last refuge of a scoundrel.
As for Billboard sales of the Hounds' album, well they may not have been on the monster level of the Chicks first three Natale-era albums, or even that of Taking The Long Way, but a sufficient word-of-mouth campaign got enough people to take notice. Besides, I don't think an album's sales are necessarily indicative of its quality. The individual listener has to judge it on its merits, and not the bean counters or the media pundits (IMHO).

Although I loved the fact that Emily in particular took on a subject that she's obviously passionate about (plagiarism, I'd presume), I did cringe when I scrolled down to read the comments. Given how obvious the similarities between the two songs are, however, I am not upset she said it. And she said it pretty diplomatically. I can only imagine how Natalie would have phrased it, lol I would have been rolling, I'm sure, in any case. I did learn from this that the haters will hate no matter what they ever say or do in the future. Quite honestly I think many of them are probably mentally unstable and they search for things to gripe and complain about on the internet. Not to get too political, but they are like the "birthers". No matter how many times the Chicks show their "birth certificate", there's always gonna be a few nuts out there saying they're "not American".

I wish she hadn't either. Few of the haters are going to "forgive" the DCX, but now she alienated the ones who were trying from the CYH...they need support for the new group. They need as much airplay as possible form all formats of radio. Almost everyone has a record that sounds like someone else's .
On another note... REK reminds me of this since he lived next to Charlie and Emily.....I know that their ranch was actually in Medina, not Bandera. I think Bandera is where Charlie and Bruce grew up and their family has a ranch there, but where is Emily's ranch now? Doesn't she have a separate ranch of her own, or are she and Charlie just sharing their ranch they have for the children?

Just what we need now is 2003 to start all over again when now all the Chicks fans want is a new album. It's bad enough that maybe the reason Natalie is not wanting to record another album still could have to do with the incident and here we have yet another comment. They just need to make music bring back Natalie and keep they're comments to themselves because as a fan I am getting really sick of this!!!!!

This would be pretty cool. The Fray recently completed a covers ep (yet to be released). It would be neat if the Chicks did something like that with five or six songs including this and Hey, Soul Sister. And I hope they are doing the real version of the song. They can have a censored version too but I hope they do the real one.
