Who else seriously loves this song?
As a bisexual person, I really appreciate that it deals with subject matter that, sadly, has a lot of relevance to the LGBTQ community - a father disowning his son for being gay. (That's what I read it as, at least.)
Oh, and musically, it is also awesome.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

I currently have it on "repeat" on my media player And I think you're right on about the lyrics. Lines like "boys should be boys, that's how it should be", "forget it girls, there ain't no use in trying", and "you ain't comin' home until you walk the straight line" are pretty sad and poignant, I think. I think it's written from an angry father's point-of-view. A good good song, IMHO.

Loving it. I like how they're still not shying away from controversial subjects. My hope has been renewed for this album.

It's out of sight! This is exactly what I wanted, and what I always thought Emily had in her. I'm speaking musically - I haven't had much chance to take in the lyrics yet - I'll check out your interpretation when I have more time. But musically, this takes them in a direction I've been longing for them to go. It's seriously one of the best I've heard in a while. It's a gift for the Roots stations - and in my view a real possibility for an AMA nomination.

Ain't No Son is such a powerful song. I love it. The only drawback is it's not as fun to sing along to because the lyrics are so sad.

This is a little odd.......I read a book set in 1960s Mississippi where there was a brief flashback to a man beating his son for being gay. I just finished it......
Slightly deja vu moment aside, this song is quite simply awesomesause. Two thumbs up to the Court Yard Hounds!

Yes, I agree with Soupchef
This is what I make of the lyrics:
"I've got something to say, I'm scared and so afraid Can you take me as I am? Come what may, our blood is just the same I'm still your little man.
I say you ain't no son to me, Ain't no son to me - Eight pound baby that I bounced on my knee? No, you ain't no son of mine You, ain't no son of mine! Aw, forget it girls - ain't no use in trying! Don't expect to get my love for free, Don't expect to get my love for free, And don't blame me!
Well, this ain't no fun for me This ain't no fun for me Oh, boys should be boys That's how it should be Well you ain't coming home, No - you ain't coming home Till you walk the straight line. You'll be out on your own Don't expect to save your soul for free When you're the one who turned your back on me.
Aren't you a sight to see, Yes, you're a sight to see What you call freedom makes you look like a freak ? ? ? (Couldn't make out that line 'Cos it sure got around Don't you know that I can't show my face in this town? You think I'm gonna get you from off of me (not sure of that line When you're the one who turned your back on me Stranger, stranger on the wall, When the neighbours come to call I just don't know what to say So I'll put you away This time I won't leave a trace, I'll fill up the empty space When I put you away.
I say you ain't no son to me, Ain't no son to me - Eight pound baby that I bounced on my knee? No, you ain't no son of mine You ain't no son of mine! Aw, forget it girls - ain't no use in trying! Don't expect to get my love for free, When you're the one who turned your back on me Don't blame me! Shame on you Shame on you Shame on you!"
I'd say this is the best Country song to explore how people react to homosexuality since Rodney Crowell's "Wandering Boy". As this song deals with the initial fury and rejection, and the other deals with the achingly sad final return to Houston - I hope some people will make the connection, and see the songs as a pair. For contrast, here's the end of "Wandereing Boy".
"I used to cast my judgments like a net All those California Gay boys deserve just what they get Little did I know there would come a day When my words would come back screaming like a debt I have to pay Lean on me I'll be strong You're almost free It won't be long Wandering boy"
I said earlier that this could get an nomination at the Americanas - given the AMA track record of picking issue songs, now I think that's even more likely.

I love this song!!! Have my speakers cranked up.... and thanks Phil for the lyrics... It makes getting used to a song much faster when you can read along with the music...

I just heard "Ain't No Son" for the first time coming from the CYH web site. This is one heck of a thrilling and inspired song!

Lol Ok so I am Gay..and I haven't got to listen to this as much as you all have (most likely) but I didn't even pick up on the possibility that the words were referring to a son being gay. My interpretation was that this WAS the divorce fight song. Meaning. Emily is saying to Charlie "look" you wanted your freedom and now you are looking like a freak. Don't blame me for what has happened. You are not a son of mine so you don't get my love for free. LOL BUT now after really listening to lyrics...I wonder where they are drawing this story from...It sure seems to be talking about a gay son....hmmm lol How did I miss this.

I didn't catch it at first either, Ben. I was so caught up in the great melody and music that I didn't really pay attention to the lyrics yet. But when Soupchef pointed it out, I listened really hard to the lyrics. In my mind's eye, the reference to a gay son seems obvious. The lyrics are actually quite sad

hopefully emily and martie will tell us soon...when my mom first listen to it she thought it was about the divorce she's got better hearing than me (I mean that literally I wear aides) but when I listen I think it's about a father disowing his son for being gay

hopefully emily and martie will tell us soon... On the official site, it says it's "sung from the myopic point of view of an angry, unaccepting father". For what it's worth - Mainstream fans may turn out to like like this song too. Several of my friends in the Carrie Underwood fan base are calling it one of their two favourites so far (the other being FOWT). To quote one: "Ain't No Son proves they're not going to lose their edge just because Natalie's one of the feistiest singers around."
