Ah - interesting article. Thanks for posting that.
"Americana and pop-country" - the problem is, these days, that's rather like oil and water. Once, it was possible (though those terms weren't really in use then). For example, Nanci Griffith, who was something of a role model during the transition, and Suzy Bogguss, who was the first established singer to go to one of their concerts when they moved to Nashville - both managed to combine the genres. Nowadays, I think it would be considerably harder - the division has crystalized, and shows a lot of mutual contempt. (It's OK for me - I can listen to all three Carries - Underwood, Hassler and Rodriguez - but I feel somewhat lonely on the "tribal" music scene, where Mainstream, Bluegrass and Alternative often seem like separate worlds).
That said - two acts last year were taken seriously in both Americana and Mainstream - the Pistol Annies, and the Civil Wars - so maybe the CYH could pull it off - though my feeling would still be that they'd really have to choose.
For fans particularly interested in a new DC project, there is, as Sue said, little to boost hopes. The doubtful tour with another act that Martie mentioned earlier doesn't seem on the horizon. Emily's closing words, if anything, seemed to put things further into the background: "I've always said I would love to record another Chicks album at some point. But we all have to agree on that.”

Very well thought out, and maybe country music has become Balkanized in a way. Then again, that's the kind of backlash that the form undergoes when it becomes as corporatized and cold-blooded as it has become now. I don't think it's either country or pop, nor do I think much of it is even all that interesting. It's mere Product that Nashville's producing, and it's interminably boring (IMHO).
