I had the good fortune today of participating in the Los Angeles County 5K Heart Walk here in Pasadena, which is designed to fund programs in the county meant to treat and cure all forms of heart disease. I did this with my younger brother and his wife, the latter of whom has suffered from heart troubles all of her thirty-six years of life.
The 5K Heart Walk route is along the roads that line the perimeter of Brookside Park and the adjacent Rose Bowl, on the far west side of Pasadena. A lot of the people do the walk, but perhaps just as many jog and/or run (including yours truly). There were more than a few participants out of the 20,000 who participated who bought their dogs with them; and sometimes it seemed it was the dogs that were doing the work more than the human runners themselves.
I took this on to test my own stamina out in what was already fairly warm temperatures this morning. I did the 5-kilometer route (which is roughly 3.125 miles) in a time of 28 minutes, 41.67 seconds, which rounds out to a 9:10:43 mile, or 5:44:33 per kilometer. I was worn out at the end, and my legs still burn more than eight hours later, but it was all for a great cause.
