Hi. I've been reading this board for a few years but don't post. I went to last night's CYH show in Lowell, MA. It was an awesome night. The set list was similar to what hilb126 posted in her Toronto thread except no See you in the Spring, April's Love or Straw Cage. The songs were in a little bit different order, too.
The show was well attended. I don't know if it was sold out (hard to tell since it was outside in a public park with people sitting in lawn chairs) but it was probably close.
I have to admit that I was underwhelmed when the CYH album first came out last year but the music has grown on me in the last year and I think a lot of the songs sounded better live. Of the new material, I really liked Phoebe and Caged Bird. I also liked Rock all Night. When introducing Phoebe, Martie talked about how their parents had an RV parked in their backyard when they were teenagers and how embarrassing that was. She said that if she was smarter she would've snuck out to the RV and made out with her boyfriend but she didn't think of it. She said they traveled to a lot of bluegrass festivals in the RV and they liked bluegrass music and murder ballads and such and that 'Phoebe' was in that vein.
For the Coast, they invited a 5 year old boy named Chase up to the stage to sing and play tambourine. He had written into the web chat and told them he liked to sing along to the Coast. Martie also brought out her twins for that song and said they'd been traveling around in an RV but that it wasn't as comfortable as the bus because it was more bumpy. Emily referred to this as the "Awwww..." section of the concert. During the song, Martie held her microphone out to the little boy to sing a long but he just shook his head. It was pretty adorable.
I really liked Martie's voice on the one song she sung lead, A Guy Like You, but I didn't love the song. I hope they find or write a better one for her to sing.
Overall, the sound was great. When I last saw the Chicks on the AAA tour in 06 in Boston, I felt Martie and Emily's vocals and instruments were drowned out but last night, I was able to hear the banjo, the fiddle and the vocal harmonies clearly. I hope everyone gets a chance to see CYH live. I think Emily's really grown into the role of lead singer and I am less eager for the Chicks to return now as long as the CYH keep doing what they're doing.

Thanks so much for that review! And I agree, as long as the CYH are around then I can wait or not care for the Chicks...thanks!

Mafan...thanks for the review, that was great. And I agree about the last tour...the backing band was way too loud for Martie and Emily.

Can't get the video to play, it freezes too much, but I'll try later. Thanks for posting it.
