Revisiting a mid-1980s movie score from an unexpected source: It was a critical and commercial disaster when released in 1985, but director Tobe Hooper's bizarre 1985 sci-fi/horror film LIFEFORCE, based on English writer Colin Wilson's 1975 novel The Space Vampires, boasts, among other things, a large-scale orchestral score by Henry Mancini--yes, that Henry Mancini, the man behind the music for THE PINK PANTHER, DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, and BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S (but he also expanded his range when he scored such thrillers as TOUCH OF EVIL, WAIT UNTIL DARK, and EXPERIMENT IN TERROR). Mancini's score, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under his direction, is incredible, with a main theme that has parallels with the scherzo of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and elements of Wagner, Bruckner, and Mahler throughout the rest. YouTube audio (opening/closing credits):

"Idolize Yourself: The Very Best of Billy Idol" is what I've been listening to as of late.
Additionally, this song is an earworm that has burrowed itself into my brain. I love it for no other reason than the fact it makes me long for my younger clubbin' days; it makes me want to be on a dance floor, lights flashing, a few drinks in me, and bumping 'n grinding with some random guy.

That film also arguably ruined her career as a European actress by making her a typecast as a sex object in countless following movies, such as one from kinky ol France where she and another breastfeed a 10yr old boy.

Quote by just "boob" re. Mathilda May in LIFEFORCE:
I think she did make a comeback, however, in the 1997 film THE JACKAL.
As for LIFEFORCE, there are some other good elements, in my opinion, notably the incredible pre-CGI effects work of John Dykstra (of STAR WARS fame)--but for me, the main attraction was Mancini's score, which, like I said, would catch you completely off guard if you had only known him for his jazz-oriented credits.

I've been listening to Sierra Hull - I'm really, really impressed with this girl, who's graduating from child prodigy to a mandolinist of distinction who's won praise from Alison Krauss, Sam Bush, Ron Block and a host of top instrumentalists. Do watch out for her if you don't know her, as she should be a real force for the future.
(Sierra, by the way is a descendant of Cordell Hull, who was FDR's Secretary of State, and won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in establishing the United Nations in the '40s)
She did have one album out as a child, but her present release, "Secrets" ranks as her main-label debut. It starts off with this awesomely eerie song:
"No one else will ever know This is how these passions always grow Following the hearts desires Leads down a path into the fire And it burns like the gold in the band That Daddy wears on his left hand
Chorus- There's a light that plays on the shadows of time Finds one wide awake in the cold, cold sweat In the middle of the darkest night And the ghost will knock at the door Till you cant kept the secret anymore
A thunder clap hid the sound of a shot on the edge of town Covered up the perfect crime, no trace of deeds left behind Just a rattle of the bone in the closet of the soul"
She includes two blistering instrumentals, "Hullarious" and "Smashville" - but most tracks are vocal, with her poignant songs of love and heartbreak being highlights.

Bingo, thanks for the reference to Sierra Hull. I think she was on the Grand Ole Oprey show one week. Maybe a couple of years ago. Another group I'm sure you know is Cherryholmes. They are playing here in Marin on Mar 21st. A friend of mine is attending the show with me. Lookong forward to it.....
