I think this letter to the editor says it all. This man really gets it.
Letters Let fans decide about Dixie Chicks Poor country radio. Perhaps it has come to realize it is not the trend-setter it once thought it was. Crying because of the awards to the Dixie Chicks! Country radio is so dominated by charts and the music industry it has lost sight of the fact that the radio station itself is nothing more than a lap dog. It’s told what to play, and in some cases when to play it.
Several years ago the radio stations tried to show their influence and ban a song by Johnny Cash, but that backfired. Then Cash became the darling of the industry. If stations can ban something they don’t like, which is their right, then they shouldn’t put down those who have a different voice.
For the past 40 years I have worked with a couple of country music performers. I have written books and liner notes on their music. I have seen the influence record companies have on the media. I have seen the popularity of country music rise and fall a number of times over the years.
Do I agree with the stand the Chicks have taken? Not necessarily.
Charts to the contrary, let the fans determine an artist’s popularity and judge for themselves whether or not to purchase their records. Apparently, someone is buying the music of the Dixie Chicks.

i guess i didn't realize that johnny cash had a song banned a few years ago. that's interesting. also, i don't think the chicks took a stand; i think they just reacted to the criticism and that's perceived as taking a stand. i think they just want to continue to make great music and continue to gain new fans.

Yeah...Think about the "We're more popular than Jesus Christ" comment John Lennon made back in the '60's. It reminds me alot of what the Chicks went through. Radio quit playing their records, people burned there records. Sound familiar. Look what came of the Beatles...It sure ruined their career aye:) Greatness cannot be banned....

Don't make me laugh! I was around during the Beatles and that quote did not ruin their careers.

Don't make me laugh! I was around during the Beatles and that quote did not ruin their careers. Yes it did. They are only selling millions every year,36 years after they disbanded.

And don't forget the 8 Track Tapes. Popular from the mid 60‘s to the early 80’s, in the US, 8-track cartridges were phased out of retail stores by around 1983.
