So I went to the Vh1 Storytellers Concert last night, and have to say it was just AMAZING..everything I could have imagined. I was 10 feet away from the stage, the crowd was great and it didn't take them alot of time to set it up. I have to say, Martie really did shine during this concert. She was fierce, she played her instruments like she was out to kill someone, she was just 120% there. Natalie I would have to say the same about her, Emily on the other hand was pretty quiet. I'll list some of the songs they played and the stories I can remember behind them; Sin Wagon - This was actually the last song they played and probably the most passionate only behind "Not Ready To Make Nice." The song actually gets its name from the movie "Grease", appearantly Natalie is a big fan and has watched it many times, and there is a part in the movie when one of the character says "I will not be joining you in that sin wagon!" or something to that affect. Natalie also mentioned she kept trying to get the girls and the song writers to use the title "Sin Wagon" and go somewhere with it but that it wasn't going anwhere for awhile until they did finally use it. Cowboy Take Me Away- This song was written for Emily by Martie. Martie said that Emily had gone through a string of bad boyfriends that she didn't approve of, and when she was dating her current husband, Martie wanted this guy to take her away and ride off into the sunset just like the song. They also mentioned that Martie and Natalie sang the song drunk at Emily's wedding, and that the video was under "lock and key" and "wont be in the documentary." OK SOMETHING YOU WONT SEE ON VH1; Martie couldn't figure out how to play her solo on her instrument when it came time to do it on this song. They stopped the song in the middle of it the first time and they tried to walk Martie through it (for about 10 minutes) but it just wasn't working so they moved on. They then performed it again, and this is where Martie just blew everyone away because she had all this pressure to get it right; the girls were kidding her about it the whole time, she kept practicing and kept getting it wrong and it all came down to this one moment of her really stepping up to the plate. And MAN DID SHE EVER. She just blew everyone away..I could tell the audience was on pins and needles, we wanted her to get it but were afraid she wouldn't and SHE DID! She got a standing ovation just for her and not the other 2 memebers..it really was a awesome moment. Not Ready To Make Nice - AMAZING performance of this song, got a standing ovation. Natalie stated that they used to cry when they performed this song because it was so intense and raw, she also said that this song wasn't just about "everyone else", and how everyone took it that they were snapping back at them. Truth #2 - They talked about this one for a bit. Natalie said it actually turned into one of her favorites on the album. She said the original singer (I forget her name) inspires Natalie and that she's her favorite singer to "ripp off". They laughed about the refrence to "water to my hips" and how the lyrics sometimes don't make since, but that the general message is there. Natalie also made a very cool statement, referring to how everyone wanted her to "shut up and sing" and not to voice her opinion. She said "an artist not voicing there opinion means they aren't doing their job. What is a song without some kind of background or personal knowledge? Sure you can put out hit after hit..but they dont really mean anything as an artist if you don't have your voice." Silent House - Natalie almost started tearing up during this one while explaining it, so she handed it off to Martie. Martie explained that Natalies grandmother has alzheimers, and then went into a story about how she used to love books and when ever she gets really sick she started ripping books apart page by page. I'm not sure if thats a lyric in the song, but they kept making a refrence to it. Natalie also said keep in mind the song is about someone walking through a EMPTY house that is no longer lived in. I Hope- Great job on this song. Natalie said that everyone thinks its a positive song, but that she thinks its the most depressing one on the album. She said it sucks that you have to "hope" for all these normal things that everyone should have in their life already. Taking The Long Way- They ended up playing this song twice, which to me was awesome. Fav song on the album. If you saw the amazon clip of them talking while they sing, that sums its up. Lots of pages of notes and lots of work went into this one. Lullaby - Not much to say about this one. Her son Beckett loves it, calls it "his song". She reminds him its for all the girl's kids but he tells her "no its just for me". (i belive thats the son's name, whichever is older) Wide Open Spaces - This song reminded them of their time starting off as a new band. They talked about how Martie tried to get some food through a buffet where they were playing at, and a woman snatched her tray and said "we dont feed the help". They also talked about how they used to share the same motel room, and how they would have 2 beds but nobody wanted to sleep with Emily because she tears the bed up and sleeps sideways across the bed. Funny stuff So Hard- They just went into a explanation about how the song is about infertility, and how Natalie didn't have a problem having kids but that the other 2 did; so Natalie hammered them for ideas for the lyrics. They also started getting nasty ( you know the chicks..lol) and had the audience laughing about the title "SO HARD" and the line "ITS SO HARD WHEN IT DOESNT COME EASY"...to which Martie replied "To my husbands credit that wasn't the issue." HAHAHA..was really funny stuff Easy Silence- They just said that its nice being able to have someone to hold on to, in the crazy times that we live in now to have someone to share it with, is soooo important. Junichi was actually sitting 3 seats down and when they were talking about this, he grabbed his wife's hand. Can we all say AWWWWWWWW haha Ok I think I covered them all *but not sure*. After the show they had a Q & A, nothing important asked except for this one thing and I had wondered this for awhile; QUESTION: When are you guys planning out putting out a greatest hits album? NATALIE: "Well we don't have any plans to put one out right now, but I think our plan is to put out another cd and then probably a greatest hits cd." She said not to quote her on that, but there it is folks. I was kinda blah about it because usually when an artist puts out a greatest hits cd it means they are over or about to quit...hello Sugar Ray! lol Other than that, I thought it was intresting to see Lance Bass, Reichen and Chris Kattan from Saturday Night Live walking around (they got worse seats than me..haha!)....so it was a great nite. they had to replay 3 songs, but other than that picture perfect..it was like being in a living room with them and they were sitting right in front of me. Thats all I can remember now folks, ask any questions

Great review! It's fun to read each person's perspective because everyone brings something else to the table and makes us see a lot more than we will on TV. Any hints on when it will air?

Okay, this made me tear up. Junichi, you sweet, sweet man!
Thanks for that awesome and very detailed review txguy! Loved it. I'm not too familiar with "VH1 Storytellers" -- will the concert be made into a DVD? Or will it be shown on VH!?

great review! QUESTION: When are you guys planning out putting out a greatest hits album? I don't understand the need for a greatest hits album in this day of downloading. People can make their own greatest hits CD. The Chicks have already put out a live CD with a lot of their hits. I just want new stuff.

Ok yes they did say during the concert the DVD will be released of this Storytellers program.
I also forgot to mention that they played "Lubbock Or Leave It". Natalie stated that she wasn't just outright hating on Lubbock, but that people used to tell her when she was younger "Lubbock is flat and brown" and she used to defend the town. But then she moved out of it, and flying over it one day in a plane she noticed that it was in fact flat and brown, and that there wasnt much to it. Basically she stated that once she got the outsiders point of view, she began seeing things in a different light.

yet another thing i forgot to mention (cause everything is coming back to me) when the Chicks mentioned Junichi at the concert, they referred to a bad joke that he had told them and was going to put on his blog. They mentioned that msn didn't like them putting anything off color on the page or anything risque and the joke didn't make it. Kinda makes you wonder how many people go through the journal before it makes it to the web...

Here's my take of the performance, posted from the Henhouse:
So I am back from a very whirl-wind trip to LA. The whole hour difference is getting to me so I know I'm going to be crashing in about twenty minutes so I wanted to get this posted.
Tuesday - got the airport and found out that there was some bad weather coming from the west and that the plane before mine was late getting in, so my flight would be delayed about an hour. Greeeeeeeeeeeeeat. Finally got on my flight and headed out west. Watched "X-Men" - the final one, which was great. I'm surprised I liked it as I am not a sci-fi type of person. Star Wars is the closest I'll get to watching those types of movies. The second flick, "Nacho Libre" - waste of film. Perhaps one of the dumbest things I've ever seen and I only got through the first 10 minutes. Finally get into LAX, realize that Lenny Kravitz was on my flight and I was walking next to him to the baggage claim, catch a SuperShuttle to my hotel and check-in. My hotel was waaaaaaaaaaaaay crazy. Very dim lighting, very contemporary a la Andy Warhol and downtown club mixed together. I stayed at The Standard. I found out I had come too late and they had rented all the rooms I had originally selected so they upgraded me to a "Humongous" room - no kidding, that's what it was called. You could invite the US National Gymnastics team over and they could do a whole floor routine in my room. I called Lisa and talked to her for a bit before her phone gave out and mine died from lack of electricity so I wound up going to the restaurant and getting some grub (they make you pay for the food on the airlines now -- talk about CHEAPO's) and then headed back up and went to bed.
Wednesday - Got up and went down for breakfast at the restaurant. I got to sit outside and bask in the sunlight for a few hours. It was great - no humidity and lots of sunshine. I talked to Kent (from the CRCR board - he was the only person I "knew" that was going) and we made plans to meet and head over to the venue later on. I walked down 6th to Broadway where I saw three white vans and a Chrysler mini-van. The Chicks were inside doing sound checks and organizing with the peeps from VH1. Walked over to the Macy's store, did a little shopping and walked back over the hotel in time to meet Kent. Another person from that board, Bev (Songbird) met us as well. We ordered food and had it brought up to my room where we watched the Chicks on Ellen. Surprisingly, no dancing from the crew - WHA? Can't believe Emily wouldn't show off her kickin' moonwalk stylings for the Ell-meister! How insane!? But they looked lovely, although I'm still not understanding how anyone thinks wearing shorts on tv is a cool thing. Kent left, Bev wound up sharing a room with me, and I started to get ready to head over. Kent and Bev headed over before me as I had plans to curl my hair, which takes forever and a day. Finally, around 6, I headed up the four blocks in 4 inch heels and over to the LA Theater.
Taping - Once I got over there, I noticed Kent and Bev were already in line and chatting with other people who I learned were MBChicks from CRCR and her mom. VH1 was letting people in a few at a time that had already purchased tickets. We get in, I got stopped for my camera and promised I wouldn't take photos (we were told if they see you with a camera, no warnings you are simply out of the show so no photos! ) We were hauled into this line in this huge theater desperately in need of repairs and a facelift. Like Kent said, the photos are very deceiving. It was extremely dark inside and people were dressed in t-shirts and jeans and other assorted wears. I felt a bit overdressed as I was told "cocktail party attire". At around 6:45 we were led downstairs to the ballroom which felt like Satan's lair. It was SO freaking hot that my scalp started to sweat! There were Grey Goose stations all over where you could order an array of items and some small hor'dourves. Nothing overly fancy and definitely not worth the extra $50 price tag attached to the tickets. Definitely not what any of us expected and kind of a letdown. After about 15 minutes, I see Keith walking into the room to which I stopped him and he chatted for a few. Same with David Grissom, Audley and Fred. None of them could believe I flew from Philly just for this. "Dedicated" is what David said, which, is respectable coming from him. Then we saw Junichi who stopped by and said hello. I had brought a copy of my paper that I wrote on the Censorship and the Chicks for Martie which he said he'd take to her later. Around 7:20 we headed back upstairs to find out how we went about getting our seats. There were two different kinds of wristbands - black and blue. Blue bands got the first 9 rows and the stage seats (behind the girls and on the sides) while black sat furthest from the stage. Junichi found me and took my paper backstage to Martie and when he came back out he said she said thank you and to tell me hello. Kent, Bev, Melissa and her mom got seats in the third row and a single seat was open right in front of Martie in the 2nd row so I jumped on it, hoping I could get in a hello. We got the whole spiel about no food, drinks, cameras, cell phones, gum, etc.
The band came out and it took the Chicks what felt like an eternity to come out, about four minutes. When they came out, they looked great. Emily had on this black halter top with black pants and black boots, her hair up in a mini poof/ponytail. Martie looked beautiful with this black button up top, grey tweed knickers to the knees and knee high black boots, her hair with extensions pulled into a ponytail and then pulled back into an unkept braid. Natalie - I don't know what's going on with this child. She looked like she was wearing a black hefty garbage bag made into a baby-doll dress. It was the ugliest thing I've seen her in. It looked like it was sewn together by a 4th grader in Home Ec (the hem was all off and not even close to even), it had about 2" straps in which she had on a different colored black shirt underneath and on the front, near her boobs were these brass belt loop type hooks that were there for no obvious reason. Her hair was pulled back in the standard ponytail with a black ribbon and she wore ankle boots w/ heels. (I seriously wonder about their stylists choices.)
They came out and talked a little about "Taking the Long Way" and broke out into song. The songs they covered, in no order were as follows:
-Taking the Long Way -Truth #2 ** -Cowboy Take Me Away -Sin Wagon -Wide Open Space ** -I Hope -Silent House -So Hard When It Doesn't Come Easy -Lullabye -Easy Silence -Not Ready to Make Nice -Lubbock or Leave It
** - Technically Storytellers features the artists' own music, but the girls felt the need to showcase "Truth #2" as it speaks volumes about what they went through in recent years. Also "Wide Open Spaces" because it had become their anthem and most people feel as though the Chicks wrote it themselves.
We were told by the girls in the beginning that they'd simply be winging their stories as they didn't have anything planned or rehearsed to say, which I felt, made it seem very choppy and unprepared, as though they were reaching for words. It's hard to speak off the cuff without knowing exactly what kind of audience you are addressing. Natalie said that most of the songs featured would come from their latest album as this is the album that they feel is most musically "them".
-Taking the Long Way - simply talked about how they sat down with the writers and started rehashing what they'd been through in the past ten years. There were so many verses that they had to widdle it down - Natalie: "Ten years of experience widdled down into four minutes. Now that's talent!"
-Truth #2 - Emily still doesn't know what "water from my hips" means, nor did any of the girls. Natalie said that she loves Patti's songs because she thinks the lyrics are so moving but doesn't understand what half of them mean. Said this was the song that most empowered them and took on a whole new monster after the incident.
-Cowboy Take Me Away - TALK ABOUT A WEIRD AND SURREAL MOMENT!! I got a shout out during this song!! Totally and utterly for real. Martie talked about how she wrote this song with Emily and Charlie in mind (with Marcus Hummon). She said Emily had a nack for dating very wacko men and that she had hoped Emily would find the right one, which she did with Charlie. So Martie always wanted Charlie to wisk her off into the sunset. Although, in Martie's journal, she had "Calgon Take Me Away" as a title/joke and that's where it came from. There is a very very rough cut of this song sung at Emily's wedding (after Natalie highlight of "Dreamweaver was sung) by a very drunk Natalie which is on video and was also said "That will NOT be in the documentary." Okay - so the shout out comes after the second verse when Natalie sings "Closer to heaven above and closer to you... closer to yooouuuuuu..." and Martie is supposed to start her fiddle part. Well, Martie completely blanks and stops playing and everyone is like "WTF is going on?" Martie goes "I can't believe I forgot my own solo." So Natalie stands there and tries to hum the song and Martie's like "That's not it..." and there's a few seconds of silence, she turns to the crowd, looks at me and says "Angela, do you know how it goes?" to which I was completely flabbergasted and could only reply "Only on mandolin and trust me, it's not any good." She tries to revive her memory with the help of Keith but to no avail, they move on but return later after a mini-break and make-up touches to do it to thunderous applause and a standing ovation.
-Sin Wagon - Emily talked about Natalie's obsession with GREASE and how she had this idea for a song called SIN WAGON. At every writing session, natalie would bring up the idea and the writers would go "Ooookay.. so what about this?" So when Stephony Smith appeared on the scene, they asked her if she could "go there" and the song come out from there.
-Wide Open Spaces - A moment that angered me some. Personally, I feel as though they are starting to just push away their older material which made them highly popular. Even though it was amateur and not written by them, ask one person the street what they sing and you'll hear "There's Your Trouble" or "I Can Love You Better" to which Martie stated in a video profile that she forgot how the song went! This song seemed to get very little reaction from them and I felt as though it was like "Uhh.. THIS song again!" AND.. Natalie forgot who wrote the song! "Susan.. what's her name?" That's just not right, in my opinion. It sounded great but just lacked any energy.
-I Hope - Natalie feels this is a depressing song while Emily and Martie both agreed it's an uplifting song. She laughed while saying "How can you feel uplifted by talking about hoping for some guy not to beat up his wife?" Odd humor here... made me wonder. But the song sounded great as there were some flips at the end with the vocal arrangements by Natalie which are different than the album version.
-Easy Silence - This song was written with their spouses in mind. They said that through it all their families and husbands were so supportive of them and the incident only made their relationships stronger. Martie said it was nice to be able to find solace in the arms of your mate. I think, for me, this was one of the highlights of the night.
-Silent House - Was written with Nat's grandmom in mind, who was known by Martie and Emily and who felt embarrassed that she was "losing her mind." The line about "the books that you read are scattered in piles of paper shreds" refers to Nat's gram who loved to read and had tons of books, but didn't know what she was doing and would tear up the books as she sat in her living room. It was very touching and moving. They sung it twice.
-So Hard When It Doesn't Come Easy - They said they never thought about the perverted conotations to this song while writing it until it was brought to their attention by another song writer. Natalie and Dan Wilson had to sit there and pull out all the emotions from Emily and Martie about infertility, to which Natalie said "Well, it was hard for me to understand because some of us didn't have as hard of a time getting it done" to which Martie replied "Ahh but it wasn't any fault of my husband. That we know." Lots of laughs on that.
-Lullabye - Was written with the kids in mind after all the heavy hard core stuff was aired out into tracks. It was the last song they wrote. Nat's family wondered if the album was going to be all "angry music" to which she said "Well, ya definitely wouldn't want to put the kids to sleep to it." Her mother-in-law was astounished that they wouldn't put something on there for her grandkids so they wrote Lullabye. This is where a lot of "Kathy Lee moments" were mentioned - ie. Kathy Lee always going on about her kids. Very cute. Nat also stopped the band as they started to point out her very crafty omni-chord "which you can get on Ebay for about $40. It doesn't have any kind of progressions whatsoever, I'm just a genius and know where all the right keys are!"
-Not Ready to Make Nice - Hardest song on the album to record but also the most personal. They had several songs written that were too sappy, too preachy, made light of it, was too heavy on the topic, just didn't sound right. Now, I've heard this song done seven times live now and each time, the ending is ALWAYS different the way Nat decides to sing it. She also didn't go into her high register and the beginning and ending "Forgive sounds good.. forget.." was done in a whisper and wasn't sung. Sounded very eeire.
-Lubbock or Leave It - Natalie said that they had received a documentary request for soundtrack work, to which Nat rolled her eyes and said it takes all of her being to sit down and watch movies for the mere sake of writing music to them. But to her credit, she put it in before Martie and Emily. It was "The Education of Shelby Knox" about the hard-core baptist teacher trying to bring sex education into Lubbock. Natalie references Lubbock as a place she enjoyed growing up in and when her parents threatened to move to Austin, she begged them not to. But everyone she talked to always refered to Lubbock as "brown and flat". It wasn't until she took a flight to Boston to go to Berklee that she looked out the window and said "Oh my god.. it really IS brown and flat!" For the song, they started to identify famous landmarks, places of interest, people. It wasn't meant as an insult but to open the eyes of little towns like Lubbock all around the country.
Other notes about the evening - They had to re-do Cowboy, Silent House and Taking the Long Way because Nat forgot to welcome everyone to Storytellers. Nat talked about writing with Bob (Schneider) and how he writes one song a day. She said she couldn't write one bad song a day, but that she's trying. They want to write the next album by themselves. Right now they have two full songs written, to which Nat said "Two songs...that's a WHOLE album!" Nat introduced us to Marty, their sound technician. She said "Now that there's another Marty, this one (points to Martie) we refer to as 'Martha.' " Martie laughed and said "No..Mar-TIE." They talked about their early times on the road and how Martie was the road manager and when they'd do convention or parties, they'd ask for maybe a fruit tray and if they were lucky a cheese tray. Most times, they'd invite the girls to the buffet line. On one occasion, Martie was in line at a party after their set and the woman organizing the party asked her what she was doing in line and Martie said "Well, I'm hungry" and the woman said "This isn't for the help" and took the plate from Martie. Martie's like "She literally PULLED the plate from me!" Nat talked about her dad and how she met this woman who organized a charity event that Lloyd and Terri play all the time and the woman goes "Your dad is SOOOO nice, he never asks for anything, not a grape, not a cracker" and Nat goes "In my head I'm saying 'What.. you never even give my dad a freaking cracker!?' " This led to the previous story and their talk about riders and having food, etc. Natalie asked if everyone read the blog and introduced Junichi, who hid or tried to hide from everyone. It wasn't easy, he was bombarded all the way through the night! Poor guy, and his lovely wife Dima and her mom were in attendance. Both very sweet people. As mentioned before, Natalie didn't sing the higher notes on the songs, like "So Hard" and "Silent House", instead orchestrating a lower version. Don't know if there were vocal problems or if it's allergies, but there were some cracks in a few songs as well.
There was a brief Q & A in which Emily and Martie both sat, making them the same height as Natalie standing in heels (was such a classic moment). I only remember four of the questions - the last one I tend to forget.
One person asked about a DVD of the AA Tour and a Greatest Hits Album. It was said they are throwing around the idea of one more full cd of original music and then possibly a GH's album but it's not definite. There will be no DVD of the AA Tour but there will be a DVD of the Storytellers session.
Another person asked what kind of environment they need to write in. Nat said it's a 9-5 job for them. They rent a room in a studio and sit with the other song writers and hash out ideas, most times spending more time talking about babies and families and getting to know each other, which is not good as it costs them money to rent the room. That's also why the record took so long. Also, Rick Rubin wanted to make sure the album fell into place and that it was constructed in a creative way, which is not what the label likes to hear. Emily was excited to write with Neil Finn from Crowded House.
Another person asked what was the hardest song to record or what was a song that was most personable to them that made or didn't make the album. I thought they would've said "Voice Inside My Head" as we've never heard it live and there's no talk about it ever. But, it was "NRTMN" to which they said it took them 100 times to hear it to not cry at it. But Natalie still chokes up when she sings it and it brings them to tears when they hear the audience.
Another asked what advice would you give to females who are songwriters or getting in the business. Emily said everyone today wants instant celebrity and a record deal and that's not the way to go. She said if she knew then what she knows now, she's happy the way their deal happened. She said playing the street corners helped keep her humble and know that it's not about the fame but the music. Nat said that you should be yourself. When she was in school, she did a great job of imitating everyone else but hadn't found her own style of singing until she came into the Dixie Chicks and only then was she able to find her own "voice."
What else.. before Lullabye Nat gave the "peace" sign and said "This is Slade's sign" and everyone "awww'ed." It was hard to hear Natalie at times because the accoustics in the building were not great at all. She sounded as if she were mumbling. The songs weren't full of energy - I don't know if they were just tired after all the big excitement last week with the TIFF, but there just wasn't a lot of energy to the songs. They didn't sound as they did at the MSG show, that's for sure. Nat talked about how she took her son, Beckett Finn to a Finn Brother's show when he was 4 week old and everyone gave her dirty looks. She's like "It's not like I brought a screaming and unruly child to a concert. Goooood!"
I know in a post-show rap with Kent and Bev on the top of the Standard, we just said it was a little disappointing. Whether it's been the last three years sitting on their shoulders or what, it just doesn't feel like the same Chicks that used to bounce around the stage on the FLY tour. I understand people grow up, but look at other singers that are moms - Madonna, Faith Hill, Martina - their shows are full energy and you know they want to be there doing their thing. And Madonna dances on a stripper pole! haha I just feel like the girls look at this not as much as a passion anymore but a job that they have to do because it's what they do. I remember Emily saying in an interview in a magazine a while ago (probably 5-6 years ago) that when it's no longer fun and it no longer has as much meaning, they'd call it quits. I just hope this isn't the pre-cursor to that. And.. I do miss the old Chicks. Kent made a comment about how they looked somber leaving the stage, not happy or giddy or anything. I tend to agree with that, they didn't really look as if they were "all there" last night. I know I've seen them a lot of times in concert, but you can just feel when it's not right. Maybe it's just me, I just felt a little disappointed. I'm really wondering how they are going to put together the footage because it was ALL over the place as far as dialogue and talking and the Q & A. Very odd way of taping this.
