Hollywood has lost another part of its family. Douglas Trumbull, the great special visual effects artist who changed the way people saw film through his work on the Star Gate corridor in director Stanley Kubrick's 1968 sci-fi masterpiece 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, and worked on many other important VFX films over the decades, has passed away at the age of 79, having suffered from cancer, a brain tumor, and a stroke: variety.com/2022/film/news/douglas-trumbull-dead-visual-effects-1235174814/Perhaps it is hard in our CGI-swamped world to appreciate how radical this achievement of Trumbull's was, but here is a still shot of the famous Star Gate that he created for 2001:
