Hey everyone, my name is John and I’ve been a Chicks fan since 1997. Nearly 20 years ago I joined the chicks rock chicks rule message board. I’ve lost my old login and after years of thinking about making a post I finally felt compelled. Nancy did an amazing job creating this space for Chick fans to interact and see rare live performances. Back in the day I would mail her maybe $5 and she would mail me burned dvds of their shows. I hope she is resting by peacefully listening to none other than the Chicks…
Anyway, it’s been over a year since Gaslighter was released. I scrolled through some threads and read that many of people posting on the pro board appear to not enjoy Gaslighter. This album has been on repeat in my car since the day I got the disc. Sure, this wasn’t an album that would win Grammys but for this Chick fan this album was full of relatable songs highlighting divorce. when parents got divorced I wish this album had been released but their divorce occurred after Taking the long way.
Regardless of your thoughts in the album. I thought I’d share mine.
1. Gaslighter - gotta love first singles. They set the tone. This lead single did not disappoint. Surprisingly not my favorite on the album but overall I find the song catchy and applaud the use of the word gaslighter. The song is straightforward and the lyrics are fire.
2. Sleep at night - the intro gave me goosebumps. Love the humor intertwined in this otherwise melancholy song. The flow of the lyrics and realism easily makes this song relatable. Also a great vocals by Natalie showcasing her strength and offer the opportunity to really read between the lines and hear the pain and anger associated with divorce. Overall…one of my top 3
3. Texas man - this song is funky! It is a song that builds and with each chorus gets bigger and bigger and bam! That last chorus and the overall message of the song promotes the empowerment to give love another go. But first you have make sure they will love you for everything you are. This song is basically words of wisdom. “if you got the strength for you then sign me up. If I’m too much for you then sign me up. Feeling my way in the dark, steal a kiss in the car. Feeling your way in the dark, steal another one at the door. Falling asleep in your arms under the west coast stars….I’m ready.”
4. Everybody loves you - beautiful ballad. Love the violin solo (wish the album had a little more violin and banjo) by overall great Charlotte Lawrence covers
5. For her - this song took me the longest to grow attached to. Musically it’s fun, it shifts genre and tempo etc. but the female empowerment presented in the song especially self love. Gets the gold from me. If I have daughters I hope they would look up to the Chicks as role models for being strong women.
6. March March - this song has some misses and some hits. However, the fiddle and banjo riffs near the end of the song are fire!
7. My best friends weddings - I love this song. It did take me a little bit to fully connect with the song but once I did. I felt in some sense the song brought back the country storytelling of their older music with clean, clear, and simple production.
8. Tights on my boat - this is like a campfire song and it’s funny, sad, vengeful, spite, and it just works. Top 3 for sure.
9. Julianna calm down - absolutely fun song. Great message and what a beautiful personal shout out to their daughters and nieces. Love dancing to this!
10. Young man - this could have been on Home or Taking the long way. Happy they did a song fully paying homage to some of their older work.
11. Hope it’s something good - probably my favorite off of Gaslight so duh it’s too 3 haha. It’s healing to hear a song like this 10 years after my parents got divorced after 25 years of marriage. I was 17 when they separated and 21 when the divorce was final. The simple lyrics with such true sentiments full of deep raw emotion. I just love this song so much. Wish they did more banjo and fiddle during the musical break or a bridge but that’s probably because I’ve been on a serious Abba kick lately.
12. Set me free - probably the most honest song on the album. It’s heart wrenching and I can feel the pain in her voice. This was a song she needed to do. I hear lots of people dislike it but I find it to be a strong album conclusion.
