Martie has tweeted that she's writing in LA with "the amazing, lovable and extremely goofy" Ryan Adams. (Oh the turns and twists of fate for Country Music's departed heroes, Lol) /photo/1

I just can't resist reposting one of my other favourite trios - with lyrics by RA, that some might consider poignant

He alienated some Country fans by an ill-chosen remark in an interview about hating the genre. But, heck, if we went by comments like that, half of us wouldn't be still here. It's the music that counts.
Yes, he is one of the greats - some would say one of the people who've shaped the Alt Country scene as it is today. In many ways, he's an ideal choice for a new Chicks song (which I suspect this writing session was aiming to produce.)
Although Natalie is still using Dan Wilson and two of the Jayhawks (Gary Louris and Mark Olson) on her album, I'm ready for the Chicks to move on from the Minnesota sound of TTLW. Ryan Adams sounds good to me.

Quote by Bingo:
Kind of what I'd expect a guy like him from well outside the mainstream to say. Trying to read between the lines here, I don't know that he hates the genre so much as what he thinks Nashville had done to it. The artist that he reminds a lot of people of is Gram Parsons...without the self-destructive tendencies of G.P., of course.
As for Nat working with Gary Louris--it's interesting to note that he has also co-written a couple of songs with Caitlin Rose on her new album The Stand-In ("Only A Clown"; "Silver Sings"), so he's very used to working with womenfolk, especially left-of-center types like Nat.

"Oh my sweet Carolina" is heavily influenced by Gram Parsons.
Interestingly, the recent Taylor Swift song, "All Too Well" makes a reference to that RA song. It's one of the few examples I'm aware of in which Taylor actually sounds more Country than Pop - she returned to collaborate with Liz Rose for that one.

I asked this question to Ross in a thread where Ryan Adams name was mentioned a while back but I'm guessing he didn't see the post since I didn't get an answer - so for anyone in this thread, what is a favorite Ryan Adams CD? And do you prefer him as a solo artist, or with the Cardinals? The reason I ask is because I acquired, recently, 8 of his CDs but haven’t taken the time to explore them yet.

Ryan Adams sounds good to me. Curious as to how you mean by TTLW sounding Minnesota, Bingo? Assuming you refer to that emotional expression as meaning 'depressing'. If so, how would you distinguish TTLW from their other albums, with that aspect. It seemed more rebelling than depressing to me, even with the ballads.

No, Boob, that wasn't in my mind at all (if there's a common connotation involving depression, I wasn't aware of it, but I don't live in America) What I meant was that Dan Wilson and Gary Louris (who between them co-wrote nearly all if TTLW) are musicians from the Twin Cities music scene in that state, both of whom had worked with Rick Rubin. Minneapolis was one of the Chicks' strongest remaining markets, and they may have been chosen partly as a "bridge" between the West Coast and the Chicks' more traditional "Heartland" strongholds. Coupled with the involvement of members of the Heartbreakers, it may have been meant partially to signal that, although the Chicks were rejecting Nashville connotations, they were not moving too far from Mid Western and Southern links. The most famous Minnesota musician, of course, has been Bob Dylan - but here's a contemporary one I like: So - not depressing, but perhaps a form of "Folk Rock" with an identity distinct from the Tex-oma and Califfornia varieties.

Ah, my bad. A mishap of lingua. There's a metaphoric phrase, "feeling Minnesota", a lyric actually, coined in the early 90s for a dismal state of mind, but not a directed insult at Minnesota. Good knowledge from you. I didn't know of the Minnesota origins. P.s....don't forget Prince too, from Minneapolis.

My favorite album is love is hell, but it is very bleak and not to everyone's taste, the album to start with is gold. i prefer him solo work.

I find him talented and something tells me I should give his music more time. I switch his music off quite easily...I feel he's a bit methodical for my taste, but at the same time I always say to others I like him.....confused??
