I saw Alison Krauss and Union Station at the Harvey's outdoor summer series in South Lake Tahoe last night. They finished with four acapella encores that blew me away.

From last night at the Hollywood Bowl:
Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, conductor
Jeremy Denk, pianist
Leah Crocetto, soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano, mezzo-soprano Brandon Jovanovich, tenor Iain Paterson, bass-baritone
Los Angeles Master Chorale (Grant Gershon, choral director)
Beethoven: CHORAL FANTASY Beethoven: SYMPHONY NO. 9 (CHORAL)
These two works have much in common in terms of melody and purpose; but rarely, if ever, have they been featured on the same program as they were last night. American pianist Jeremy Denk provided the piano work in the earlier Choral Fantasy, a 20-minute work that essentially begins as an elaborate piano piece, escalates into a concerto, and then climaxes as a hybrid concerto-cantata for piano, orchestra, vocal soloists, and chorus. And then there's the Ninth Symphony, which in its 70-minute running time encapsulates every human emotion, from horror and heartbreak to exultation and triumph at the climax with its "Ode To Joy" choral finale. And all of this from a composer who, by the time he had completed the Ninth, had lost all of his hearing, and could only really hear what he was putting down on paper in his head, heart, and soul.

The annual visit of John Williams to the Bowl was what we had last night.
Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra John Williams, conductor James Taylor, gues narrator
Williams (arrangement): TRIBUTE TO THE HOLLYWOOD FILM COMPOSER (with film)
Salute To The Hollywood Western: Williams: OVERTURE TO "THE COWBOYS" John Barry: JOHN DUNBAR'S THEME FROM "DANCES WITH WOLVES" Alfred Newman: THEME FROM "HOW THE WEST WAS WON" (with film)
Williams: SUITE FROM "THE REIVERS" (James Taylor, narrator)
J.T. encore: "Sweet Baby James"
(intermission)
Williams (arrangement): MONSTERS, BEAUTIES, AND HEROES
Williams: CIRCUS TRAIN CHASE FROM "INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE" (with film) Williams: HEDWIG'S THEME FROM "HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE" Morricone: CINEMA PARADISO" (with film) (Bing Wang, solo violin) Williams: THREE SELECTIONS FROM "STAR WARS" (with film)
Encores: IMPERIAL MARCH FROM "THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK" FLYING THEME FROM "E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL" MARCH FROM "RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK"
A very hot, sultry night was what greeted me and about 13,000 others at the Bowl last night as the legendary film composer made his annual soiree to the arena. Besides everything else, the tribute to the Western, that most uniquely American of genres, was a wonderful thing--to see highlights of all the great sagebrush sagas of the last hundred years, including STAGECOACH, HIGH NOON, THE WILD BUNCH, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, and others, being projected onto the Bowl's big screens really got one's attention. We then got the James Taylor to do the narration from William Faulkner's book The Reivers, which had been made into a movie in 1969 by director Mark Rydell with a score by Williams, which the composer and the L.A. Phil performed in back of JT. Afterward, JT came back for an encore to do his classic "Sweet Baby James."
Following intermission, there was another one of Williams' many film score arrangements from his fellow composers involving monsters, beauties, and heroes; and then it was Williams' own music from INDIANA JONES 3, and the first Harry Potter flick, followed by three selections from STAR WARS: "The Asteroid Field"; "Princess Leia's Theme"; and, naturally enough, the mega-famous main theme of that series itself. The three encores that he and the orchestra did were also as fabulous as ever.
One doesn't know how long Williams is going to be able to keep doing this, as he is approaching 80. But it was good last night to know that he still could do it, and do it better than anybody else at that stage in life.

Last night at the Hollywood Bowl was AFI Film Night, which was hosted by the MC of Jeopardy, Alex Trebek. It offered all of those in attendance to guess which film scores the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, under the direction of David Newman, was to be performing; and we used red, blue, and green glow sticks in this endeavor. The whole event began with a montage of scenes from 206 different films set to excerpts from the scores of such films as E.T., THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, CASABLANCA, and others.
The main works on the docket last night were:
Dmitri Tiomkin: HIGH NOON Dmitri Tiomkin: DIAL M FOR MURDER Alan Silvestri: BACK TO THE FUTURE Franz Waxman: THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN Marc Shaiman: SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE Michael Giaocchino: UP!
...and there were a number of others, which escape my mind.
But the weather did play tricks on us. We had a double rainbow appear over the Bowl right at sunset; and just before the show began at 7:30 PM, the skies darkened towards the east and northeast, and lightning began flashing. We didn't get any rain, but the possibility of lightning was on my mind throughout the performance. It added an ironic ambience during the performance spotlighting THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, with scenes involving a lightning storm. The wind was also kind of strong as well, possibly a downdraft from one of the nearby storm cells.
Even so, with the weather as hairy as it has ever been in my fifteen seasons of going there, it was another good night at the Bowl.

I knew she was here, but I don't like her music enough to pay the high ticket prices. I may have to reconsider next time she comes through. Jason Aldean, Thompson Square, and Chris Young will be here on 10/23. Don't know forsure if I am going yet. Really wanted to see Miranda Lambert, but missed it.

Just went to see Alison Krauss & Union Station at the Fox Theatre here in Detroit. Hands down the best concert I've ever been to (minus the chicks, of course). This is what a concert should be - no opening act and 2 1/2 hours straight of music. They played 27 songs, and the tickets were only $50 a piece. The surprise was when I got there. I'm a member of their fanclub so I was given the opportunity to get pre-sale tickets. Now, pre-sale doesn't mean much to me anymore after the fiascoes with the Chicks concerts. I was expecting a seat 20 rows back. When I get to the Will Call to pick them up (you didn't get to see where you were sitting until you picked them up the day of the concert - don't get me started on that) I opened the envelope to see two tickets staring back at me reading "Orchestra Pit, Row 1". I was front row center right in front of Alison. Not only was that amazing, but I also got waves from Alison and Jerry, as well as big smiles from the rest of the guys. I even made Alison laugh out loud twice. When they all got together at the end to do their bows, Alison and Jerry were pointing at me and talking and smiling. Poor Dan though. I don't know what was going on with him. As soon as they started to sing "Dimming Of The Day" Dan just completely lost it. He cried from song 14 to the end. He kept having to go back and wipe his eyes. There were tears literally streaming down his face. I hope everything is all right with him... But overall, AMAZING amazing experience. Nothing like being front row center at a concert of one of your all-time favorites.

Nice review Hilary. I so agree with you about front row for a concert of your favorite band. It sounds like they know you. Tell us about the encores. Were they a cappela?

Had tickets to see Mary Chapin Carpenter the weekend Irene hit...so it was cancelled. Before that, I saw Rosanne Cash (everyone MUST see her), Bon Jovi, and the Garth Brooks/Trisha Yearwood flood relief shows in Nashville.

Have tickets for Heart (and Def Leppard) on Sunday. Wasn't going to go, decent seats are expensive. Finally just bought lawn seats ($64 for 2).
I'm always paranoid if I don't see Heart that they're going to retire & I will have missed it. Didn't see them last year. And it'll be a short set, because of the "headliner" (ugh!).

Nope! And no kidding...... The local DJ's keep mentioning that DL should open for Heart. I've heard too that they are turning Heart down, yet DL plays at full rocknroll sound. We'll see I guess.
