I thought I would start a concert thread since I've been going to a lot of shows lately. You can use this thread to mention who you've seen recently. Friday night, Jennie and I saw Robert Plant and Band of Joy at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA. Buddy Miller and Patty Griffin are in the band and also each performed one of their own songs. I have to say the band was extremely tight and the choice of tunes was exquisite. For all you Zep fans, they did "Black Dog", "Black Country Woman", "Tangerine", "Houses of the Holy", "Ramble On", and "Gallows Pole" was one of the three encores. Patty did her "Ocean Of Tears" and Buddy did "Somewhere Trouble Don't Go". A big surprise for this old acid rock fan was the first encore song. I was listening for the first thirty seconds and then stood up and yelled JEFFERSON AIRPLANE!!!. Robert Plant had chosen "She Has Funny Cars" off the second Airplane album as a tribute to San Francisco music. I think the last time I heard the Airplane do it live was in 1971. Simply a great night of music.

Green Day last summer I guess... There hasn't been any good concerts in Finland since... Green Day was great and so was the opening act Joan Jett and the Blackhearts!
Kent, sounds amazing and James, though I definitely haven't heard of the Court Yard Hounds, I'm little jealous...

My last one was Sugarland and Little Big Town in Tulsa. I was front row and leaning right on the stage. It was great! I would highly recommend seeing either of them in concert!

Just went and saw Brooke Fraser. She is absolutely amazing. if you ever have a chance, go see her. Best concert I've been to this year so far. Agreed, one of New Zealand's best talents. I saw Lady Antebellum last month in Auckland. Fantastic show, made all the better by the meet & greet, and the fact that I kept running into them in my hotel!

Truck Stop
Truck Stop is a German country band that has been touring for 38 years by now! I followed them since the late 70ies when they recorded their songs still in English before changing and sticking to German texts.
On Saturday, June 4th, I saw them live in Zurich for the first time. It was wonderful and I enjoyed it a lot.
Here are some samples as many of you might never have heard from them:
From 1978: Ich möchte so gern Dave Dudley hören
From 2007: Hillybilly Country Lilly
and one of their truly favourites (performed in 2007): Der wilde wilde Westen

I began my 15th consecutive year of going to the Hollywood Bowl for their summer concerts last night (the 90th overall for the venue). It was also the 12th annual Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame Gala, at which musical artists get inducted each year for their contribution to music education; and all the money made from the Gala goes to the Los Angeles Philharmonic's music education funds. Along with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conductor Thomas Wilkins, and actors Andy Garcia, Hilary Swank, and Dame Helen Mirren, we had Harry Connick Jr. and Gloria Estefan enshrined at the Bowl. Connick and his jazz ensemble performed a gaggle of classics, including "You Don't Know Me" (yes, the immortal Cindy Walker-penned standard), and the Beatles' "And I Love Her"; while Estefan and her Miami Sound Machine did their Latin jazz/salsa thing, including "Conga", which was reprised at the end with fireworks.

Michelle and I went to the Fillmore in SF last night and saw Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna guitarist) and David Bromberg. A great night of acoustic music. Jorma did do his version of "Good Shepherd" from the Airplane's Volunteers album. David Bromberg did some new stuff from his due to be released album, one of which was a collaboration with Linda Ronstadt.

ive only been to a small handful of concerts. ill be attending the sugarland concert later this year here in wichita. but the last concert ive been to was a free concert. a 13 year old girl opened with the national anthem. she actually cleared her throat in the mic. ruined the whole song. emily west then came on. blue sky, imo, is one of the best country songs of the decade. gorgeous! and josh turner then came on. BORING! i thought to myself, the only way this could be a decent concert is if trisha yearwood came out to sing "another try" with josh. emily stole the show. i hope she makes it big.

Michelle and I went to the Greek Theater in Berkeley last night to see Alison Krauss and Union Station. Needless to say it was a couple of hours of world class music. I teared up 30 seconds in when Alison started singing. She really is an angel on stage. Every time I see this group I am reminded of the difference between good musicians and great musicians. Jerry Douglas is probably the best dobro player alive and Ron Block is amazing on the banjo. If you get a chace to see them live, you should do it.

The last concert I went to was The Doobie Brothers at the end of May. GREAT concert! Played all the old classics…I would highly recommend hitting one of their concerts if they come to your town.
And they sounded just as good as they did 30 years ago. : )
