That word always gets me - it has a quite different meaning over here (not one used by people who respect individuals' sexual orientation)

Yes - minority groups often adopt words that have been used against them, as a point of pride or defiance, or an in-group "badge of honour".
It's when it's used by outsiders that the problems tend to arise. Except perhaps between close friends (and even that can be dodgy when a group keep using it as a joke to one "token" friend from the minority), such terms are usually meant, and taken as an insult.
