Thanks, Nancy! I liked this one - it's a good song (one in which the lyrics are self-probing, and not entirely sympathetic) This requiries confidence in the singer, who has to give it an "in character" performance. Emily handles this "singer/songwriter" role convincingly. Another sense in which she shows confidence is that this is not primarily an instrumentally dominated song. Both CYH do have featured instrumental passages, but they're relatively short - and, basically, this song puts most emphasis on the vocal. I don't actually think Emily's vocal projection is technically all that strong yet - but that's not the key element to this type of song. The key elements are character and engagement with the lyric - and on those aspects she is strong - for me, this performance shows she has no problem holding an audience as lead, and making the song subtle and believable. The pizzicato parts on the fiddle should give Martie no trouble (she's an experienced bass player), and her harmonies add a lot to the singing. Audley, Fred and Marty give a good persistant rhythm support, without intruding on the vocal. This is exciting - and an example of what I've been wanting to see them do for years!
