One of the few comments I've seen so far from a serious Country Music critic is by Jim Malec of the 9513.
It's only a brief comment - not a full review - but I'm afraid it's not very favourable. He says:
"The CYH stuff really underwhelmed me. It’s very in sync with a lot of mainline Americana stuff that’s been coming out; I was hoping for (and, based on the pressers, expecting) something a bit more rootsy."
(Some of his readers' comments disagree. The question is raised as to what the difference is between "Americana" and "Rootsy", and apparently the answer is "something less electric, more acoustic".)
For those who don't know his site, I think Malec can be a hard man to please. Over on Carrie's fan site, he's almost regarded as a Public Enemy, for consistently putting down everything she does, in a way that they see as "bashing". I've read a number of his reviews, and if he does have a bias, I think it's probably this: when an artist whom he doesn't see as capable of producing anything different brings out a record that is highly commercial and predictable, he'll review it on its own terms, but where he suspects that the artist is capable of more adventurous range and depth, he'll disparage them for sticking to the commercial mainstream.

I really hated the first songs of the CYH on their website, but the stuff they were singing live has changed my mind. I actually like it.
