Nielsen Soundscan (who are the company that collect sales returns from all outlets and license the figures to Billboard and other clients) will not release any figures until Wed, 31st.
I have seen predictions, presumably based on retail outlets' own forecasts, that the record will sell in excess of 400,000 copies in its first week. (Thiis is unofficial - and in any case "in excess" is an open ended term)
In the meantime Billboard have published two charts showing that sales that were finalized and delivered up to one day before the official release date made the album the sixty-ninth best selling Country album in physical CD sales, and the eleventh best selling Country internet full-album download (These figures are also pretty meaningless, as they only count "jump-the-gun" sales before the album was officially available.)
Sorry I can't provide anything more definite.

WOS, TOTW, Fly and Home also were doing well in the "back catalog" sales chart.

I found this on democraticunderground.com(excuse my bad spelling) Thought it was interesting, it was just on a thread on there and on the orginal post with this it had the time magazine cover
[glow=red,2,300]Sony is estimating CD sales will end up somewhere between 190,000 and 225,000. Best Buy alone will account for over 50,000 scans, or approximately 30%.
How do I know this? I work in the music industry for a big old label. So no links, you'll just have to trust me on this.
It's a lock. It won't even be close. SoundScan will come out next Wednesday, and the whining from the right will reach histrionic proportions. The stranglehold they have held over the popular media will be shattered by this news, and they ain't gonna like it.
Starting to see a trend here? All those things the Right hates are suddenly becoming very popular. The entertainment business will follow, just like it always does.

I'd say this person is about 200K off in his estimate. We are looking at 400 to 420K for opening week.

From Amazon.com:
"Taking The Long Way" is still the #1 Top Seller in music. "Home" is the #10 Top Seller in music -- not bad for a three year old CD.
An interesting side note: Neil Young's "Living With War" is the #7 Top Seller in music. This CD features a song called, "Let's Impeach The President." Where are the boycotters for this one??

Just another example of how the country audience is different. Neil Young has had the same following I believe for a very long time and I haven't heard him on the radio that much so I don't think too many people blink an eye when he or green day or kayne west or pink talk bad about Bush

I honestly think that some fans of country music don't want their idols to grow or evolve as artists. Most of the big names seem to do the same thing time after time. I don't want to bash country artists, but when was the last time one of them strayed from their comfort zone? A few of them might dabble in pop, but the music isn't that much different than what they've produced from their beginnings in the business. I think the country music community might not have liked the Chicks new CD, even without the controversy of three years ago. The music is much more mature and reflective now, not the "cute" tunes they cranked out at the beginning.
Of course, some of the people who hang out at the CMT site probably don't like TTLW because the Chicks allowed a Negro into the recording studio.
That last part was a joke.

Home has fallen to #14 on Amazon but Wide Open Spaces is at #33 on and Fly is at #51. That's 4 CDs in the top 51. Taking the Long Way is still at #1.

I bought the new CD Tuesday at Circuit City. They must have had 40-50 of them. I stopped by last night to buy one for a gift and they had run out already. A new larger shipment is due on Sunday.
That speaks well for the sale of the CD...and Circuit City must be running out like Target and Walmart.

Pearl Jam's is decent, and Dear Mr. President is the best song on Pink's album. Paul Simon's piping in now, too, and his new one is pretty good. These were all top 10 records at one point, and Green Day even won a Grammy. The times, they are a changing. Do you think if a male country artist had said the same thing as Natalie that there would have been as bad a backlash? I may just be a prejudiced outsider, but I always thought country was the most misogynist of genres outside of rap.

Now it's back up to #12.

I may just be a prejudiced outsider, but I aways thought country was the most misogynist of genres outside of rap. I believe you hit that nail on the head, jim! I live in Texas and unfortunately see the misogyny firsthand. And kudos to you for being "man enough" to call some of your fellow men on it. Guys like you give me hope.

Oh, you made me blush. In the circles I move around in such sentiments about strong women are not uncommon. My dad listens to country music so I was exposed to it from an early age but never really liked 99% of it. I like Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, and some older CDB and a few other songs here and there, but it all seemed to be about drinking and cheating and then crying about getting caught. A woman was supposed to "Stand by Her Man" no matter what. I don't want my daughter to grow up in that kind of world, or put up with that kind of crap. I must admit that I hadn't paid much attention to the DC either until after the incident. The first song I heard of theirs that I liked was "I Hope" at one of the Katrina benefits. The opening lines gave me chills. So I am one of those people now who are accounting for all those back catalog sales. I'm still not that big on much of their older stuff but I do like "Goodbye Earl" , '"Travelin' Soldier" , "Truth #2" , and "Sin Wagon." It's a little hard not listening to the new one long enough to give the other ones a fair chance, but maybe in time. I will be driving up to LA to see them, assming I can get tickets. It's hard out here on the west coast because you have to get up early or they'll be all sold out. Chicks like Natalie, Emily, and Martie give us all hope and some cool tunes to listen to. I'm kind of thankful for the controversy because otherwise I might have missed out on all this. That's what all the haters will never undertand. They hyped the comments with their hate and drove people like me towards the DC. It might help explain where I'm coming from to note that I've been driving around with this sticker on my car since 2002:

I love that sticker!!! I want that on my car except my Aunt just HAS to move to Stockton and heaven forbid if she had to drive my car with something totally would make the car crash-I don't get how she still supports Bush SOOO much I guess that is part of the 29% that is left

I'd love to wear it on a tshirt to a CHICKS concert. They would surely get a laugh from it!
