“Tracks of My Years” is a feature of a Radio 2 programme in the UK where famous people, over the course of a week, select 10 tracks which have influenced their life or career. This week’s guest is Benny Andersson, who is a founder member of, and co-writer for Abba, who are probably one of the greatest “pop” bands of all time, even though they are/were not very well known in the US. They had numerous hits in the UK, Europe and Australia from 1974 until they disbanded in 1982, after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with “Waterloo”. I missed hearing Benny’s choices on Monday, but my wife remembered to mention to me last night what his choices were. He chose Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys and NTRMN by the Chicks. Those of you in the UK can listen to what he says about the Chicks and about the song here - www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00lqdq0 - under the Tracks of My Years heading from about 1 min 25 secs. Alternatively, you can click on the “listen” link and go to about 2 hours 18 mins into the programme where he gives his comments, followed by the track. For those unable to listen to his comments, this is what he said: “I just stumbled over the Dixie Chicks ( this rings a bell!!). I heard the song on the radio and I bought myself a couple of records and then I saw this documentary about them coming here talking about George Bush, saying exactly the right things ( my highlighting) but when they were banned in the US and they really had to struggle. And this is a great song”. Clearly a man of great taste!

Benny always struck me as a cool kinda guy. I've seen a lot of interviews with him. He obviously has great taste in music too.

Quote by alikat re. ABBA: Perhaps they weren't having #1 hits left and right here like they did in Europe, but Abba did have more than a few big hits, beginning with "Waterloo" (which got up to #6 here thirty-five years ago this month), and culminating with "Dancing Queen" (#1, April 1977). And the only Swedish product that's outsold them here in America, of course, is Volvo. It's just a lot harder for a group that doesn't come from the US/UK sphere of influence to really have sustained success here. Anyway, it's nice that Benny plugged "Not Ready To Make Nice" as one of his favorites.

On the Beach Boys note...
Once upon a decade ago, I happened upon a street fest in a Deutschland burg were a Beach Boy cover band was rockin' the crowd.
The most interesting moment was when the Deutschlanders began chanting "ooo ess ahh... ooo ess ahh"
Pretty cool, cross-cultural moment.
ps (ooo ess ahh = U.S.A.) pps (Go Germany!)
