Why else would he make the statment about pretending to be a Democrat?
because the press might talk about him mentioning a Chick and politics in the same sentence? they tend to like to talk about that.
I'm a little surprised that everyone jumped on this as being truthful. It comes from CMT, and we know how much they love the girls. Just because they assume the song is about her, doesn't mean it is. Doesn't mean it isn't though, either, I realize. We'll see when his album comes out, I guess. if that ever happens.

As for CMT, people tend to assume that they're anti-Chick because of the tone of the message board - but those messages are posted by members of the public, not by CMT staff writers.
CMT itself continued to air Chick videos. It's staff and blog writers have been divided. Craig Shelburne and Alison Bonaguro have most often written favourably about the Chicks. Hazel Smith was one of the most prominent journalists to defend the Chicks in the incident (she takes a faceted view and can see both sides of the controversy).
The main writer who's attacked the Chicks there has been Chet Flippo (who used to like them , but "flipped" - if you'll pardon the pun - over the incident). Since then, he seems unable to get beyond it.
That article is not by a CMT staff writer - it's by Jim Allen, who writes freelance from New York (where the concert took place). He's a strong supporter of Honky Tonk and traditional Western Music - so would arguably lean more to appreciating Charlie than a more Mainstream focused group. But apart from that, I don't know how he'd feel about the Chicks

I agree with Peppermintpatti. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but I don't recall Emily, or even Martie for that matter, ever overtly admitting to being a Democrat; I've heard her express disbelief and discontent that people have an unbreakable habit of presuming all Texans to be Republicans when in fact, according to her, she's lived in an area that was almost entirely blue, which really says nothing as to her own view point. Maybe people are making a similar mistake in assuming that each of the Dixie Chicks are Democrats; the only one I think anyone can be sure about is Natalie, but either way, why does it even matter?

I don't "being a Democrat" is relevant, really. The point is, was Emily able to be more clear-headed than the majority of the mob-rule country music community about Iraq, especially? 'Cause that's where the line got drawn in the sand.
I know few critical thinkers who went along with all the Iraq war hype once we all started reading and hearing more of the truth about it - and not only the official Rove reports. During that time, Charlie was quoted on his website as saying something to try to extricate himself and Emily from "the incident". He may have felt the same way many of us felt - that America was sold out by our ideologue president and vice president - but didn't want to admit it openly. Or he may have been 100% on board with the Bush/Cheney doctrine.
Emily loved him, and has children with him, so I hope she's able to have a decent relationship with him. But I have gotten the distinct impression that he was one of those guys who tend toward arrogance.

I don't follow you. So you're saying he said that just to get some publicity? Charlie clearly doesn't want to be famous so I doubt that he'd make a statment like that just for the attention.
The song isn't out yet (and, in any case, the article doesn't mention the title of the song).
The album (which will be called "Beautiful Day") is now set for release on June 23rd. One song has the same title as the album, and other titles include "Reconsider," "Down Again," and "Nothin' Better to Do". There will also be a cover version of Bruce Springsteen's "Racing in the Streets".
Much of the album was written during the divorce, when Charlie had moved temporarily to a small flat in San Antonio. There is speculation that several of the songs reflect his feelings at that time. Charlie commented "When I was writing this record, I was going through the quintessential divorce thing of living in a one-bedroom apartment in downtown San Antonio across from the bus station. When it's over, it's over."
Fotnote: for what it's worth, I think the situation between the former couple does appear to have become amicable. Emily took the children to a concert, and Jule was photographed on stage, resting against her father's knee while he sang. Reports suggest they get on better now than for some time. However, I don't think we can expect Charlie's feelings to have been very settled earlier, while the divorce was going through - and the record refers back to that time. Break-ups and reconciliations are complex - and personal - processes, and it's unlikely that feelings typically remain on the same level throughout)

Everybody sure does dissect everything - with the jerry springer mentality and 24-hour news channels. But for those of us who care about these people - more than just as a gossip subject - it's all sad. And I feel sure none of us wish any of them ill. It WOULD help, though, if Charlie didn't go around spouting off attitude-charged remarks about the marriage or his ex-wife.

And here I thought Charlie was a real great guy he sounds like a butt head. Emily should be proud to be rid of him. I mean how low can you get writing songs like that about your divorce from such a great person as the oh so gorgeous Emily. Charlie lost out.
Again I ask people why you think CMT hates the Chicks? They NEVER stopped playing their videos, even when the hysteria was at it's highest. I give them bonus points for doing that. They put music over politics.
I just can't see Charlie as a Republican, but who knows. I can't see Emily as a Republican either, but who knows? My very Democrat father sure didn't follow his very Republican parents in their voting. Charlie and Kevin Fowler did go entertain the troops in Iraq a few years ago, but Democrats support the troops too.
We do take songs too seriously. We take everything too seriously about the Chicks. LOL
As far as KNOWING Charlie is a jerk, a Republican, or the reason their marriage broke up....let's get real here...NONE OF US KNOWS S**T ABOUT THESE PEOPLE! We know what they and their publicists want us to know. Unless we are personal friends with them, WE JUST DON'T KNOW!
