A great, but underappreciated, pioneer - Grandpa Jones
(His style remained little changed from the 1940s, and predates classic Rockabilly - it is effectively a bridge leading from the Old Time Mountain bands of pre-War days)
(The introduction is by Boxcar Willie)

I would like to have started this sequence with an important root influence on this style of music (and on the British revival of the 1960s) - Uncle Dave Macon - but it's hard to find film that does him any justice. ("Sail Away Ladies", with Sam and Kirk McGee , would have been ideal - if a film exists, which I doubt).
All I can find is this brief and chaotic comedy sketch - Uncle Dave is the short, elderly man playing banjo, wearing a hat and white shirt, with a sheriff's star on his waistcoat, around the 24 second mark)
This a modern Uncle Dave tribute singer, Leroy Troy:
This recent film from Murfreesboro shows some musicians and dancers at an Uncle Dave Macon Festival. The interesting point is the flatfoot dancing, which provided the percussion, before drums were used in string band music. Similar dancing styles are still practised in various parts of the British Isles (Good to see it taken up by all generations!)
Finally - an ongoing tradition. This is Uncle Dave's great-grandson (also called Dave Macon)

thought that I would throw out a couple more suggestions Allison Moorer ~ ALABAMA SONGand one from her sister, Shelby Lynne ~ SLOW ME DOWN (a song from her 1995 album RESTLESS ) and Eva Cassidy's version of ~ SONGBIRD ... just maybe one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded (this is a photo tribute, with her LP's track playing along to the pictures) Alison Krauss (& Union Station) ~ WHEN YOU SAY NOTHING AT ALLanother song that would rank as one of the most beautifully sung/performed songs ever recorded

Simon & Garfunkel had the most popular version of this song. Hers is better, I've heard a few versions, but never the original.....a rare find I guess. ((((as for Bjork, well you should smile, at least I have an opinion on the matter. My second favorite is Earth Intruders)))) ;D
