(I'm afraid I'm a long, long way from Chicago!) However, I noticed this item in a news report: "Loretta Lynn (the best booking of the fest) joins two-thirds of the Dixie Chicks on July 1, Country Music Day"www.wbez.org/blog/jim-derogatis/2011-06-09/start-chicago%E2%80%99s-summer-scaled-down-music-fests-87595#I'm not sure how to take the meaning of "joins" in that sentence....it could be no more than a shorthand way of saying "shares the bill on the same night" But if "joins" is to be taken literally, it would be a major boost, as few legends stand greater than Ms Lynn. One straw in the wind - I think Loretta Lynn may have asked the Dixie Chicks earlier to appear on her recent tribute album (emphasis on the word 'may', as this is only conjecture). But she did make a real effort to draw together all political and stylistic wings in Country Music for that album, making a point of asking anti-war artists, like Steve Earle (who'd been more consistently outspoken than the Chicks) and Lucinda Williams (who identified with Natalie's comment a few days later on a Sussex stage, by saying "ashamed don't begin to cover how I feel about him"). Given that reach out, I think it's possible that she might have asked the Chicks, who have a higher profile. We are not told who (if anyone) declined to take part - but the Chicks, being on hiatus, would not have found it easy to accept, even if they'd been minded to do so (which may not have been the case anyway, given the "Country" identification.) Still, I'd be interested to know if there is any contact between Loretta and the Hounds, either on or off stage.

Chicago Park District wrote this about the girls performing on July 1st at Petrillo Music Shell.
Court Yard Hounds, featuring Martie Maguire and Emily Robison – the two sisters from Dixie Chicks -- kick off the night at 5 p.m. This side project to Dixie Chicks features personal songs that go back to their roots as a country pop band.
So they are opening for Loretta Lynn. I guess that shouldn't surprise us since Loretta is a country music icon.

Well, alright then. Maybe we can meet up. I'm going to try and get as close to the stage as possible without damaging my guide dog's ears. I'm so excited.

I guess that shouldn't surprise us since Loretta is a country music icon. I think that journalist is quite wrong to describe their roots as a "Country Pop" band. Their roots were in Texas Bluegrass (which is usually acknowledged) and in Western Swing (which, perhaps because it's become less fashionable, is seldom acknowledged , but just as true.) For years, they described themselves as a "Cowgirl Band" - which would horrify Nashville and be laughed at by most Country Pop fans. I'd say they really only steered seriously towards Country Pop with their third album, "Shouldn't a Told You That" - and I think that style suited Laura more than the Erwins. Today, they still have friends on both the Bluegrass and Western Music scenes - but few it seems in Country Pop. As I said earlier, I'd love to know if there's contact between them and Loretta Lynn - I'd go 50-50 on that one But I'm 99% sure they'll meet up with Wanda Jackson when they share a bill in Ontario. She's the Queen of Rockabilly and still a greatly revered figure in Texas and Oklahoma music. She went out on a limb earlier for the Dixie Chicks, and said she loved them - and the Hounds said recently they wanted her on their chats.

I'm definitely going to give my all to be there, tho I'm just out of a cast because I tore some ligaments in my ankle. I have been trying to find some info on what kind of handicapped assistance will be available, since I can't do very much walking or standing. All I could find so far is here: easyaccesschicago.org/access_info/attractions.php?id=1 - general info with the address & phone numbers for Grant Park specifically, and from there you can find what kind of assistance they offer for guests with restricted mobility, hearing, vision, etc.... What I cannot find is if there will be any seating or if they will allow people to bring lawn chairs into the park. Also, it would be nice to know where exactly is the best place for people with restricted mobility, hearing, vision, etc. to enter the park and where to sit. I'll probably have to call the Chicago Park District. I live less than an hour's drive from Chicago, but I have never been to a concert in Grant Park, and I have only been to the Taste of Chicago once or twice. If anyone has any other info please post it, and if I get any info from the Park District I'll post it here. On the bright side there's only 9 more days to go!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited!!! I wonder, since this is a relatively smaller venue, if there'd be any opportunities to catch Emily & Martie for an autograph?! What do you think?

I'll be taking photos, but probably no video unless my husband decides he wants to schlep arounds the video camera (which is quite small). So I guess, yes, there is a chance my husband will be taking video of the night.
Emily Fantastic, I would like to meet you. You will be easy to spot since you'll have your guide dog with you.
My mission that evening is to meet the girls! No doubt about it!

So for a headcount we have: • EmilyFantastic (what's your name again?) • Shauna (screen name?) • me (Michaela or Dee; either name I respond to) We might be meeting some friends there, but will know better as the week progresses. I can't believe I will be mere feet away from the girls! At Chicks concerts I've always been far away, so this will be a treat! I'm giddy with excitement! ;D

I've got lots of pictures from the concert yesterday so I'll be posting a little at a time… First, the weather for the day was supposed to be hot and humid, a high of 97! We dressed appropriately for that weather, but mother nature had other plans. She brought in a strong storm the night before, and it continued in the morning. It was very windy and cold, and luckily my husband brought a windbreaker, which I was more than happy to wear. We entered the Taste of Chickago at 11:00 am. I immediately scanned the area for tour busses. I saw two, but I just had a feeling they weren't the CYH busses. My husband pointed out that there was a coal miner emblem on the back of one of the busses…and we deciphered that as being Loretta Lynn's caravan. With every step I took along the Taste, I was scanning the crowd, thinking that maybe, possibly, I'd run into the girls grabbing a bite to eat. But, there was no sight of them. No tour bus either. I checked the CYH website thinking that they canceled last minute…but nothing. My husband thought that they could have parked off-site. Smart guy. That made sense, so we went with that. Here's what the Chickago sky looked like at 2:00 About 2:30 in the afternoon we walked toward the grandstand…as we got closer we realized the girls were on stage practicing! The closest I could get was about 75 yards away, since the grandstand had a fence around it. I was giddy with excitement!!! I got to hear a concert before the concert! They ran though most of the songs on their set list…and even played Lil Jack Slade twice. They were tweaking the beginning of it…so it sounded like the TOTW tour version, which I prefer to the album version. Here are 2 pics I took of practice. More pics and story to come later tomorrow. ;D

Although the pics didn't come through on here, if you click on the broken pic icon, they do show up. That sky looks scary. Glad you enjoyed yourself!
