Jacqui Sharkey and Caitlin Murtagh have revived "Never Be the Sun" - a song written by their fellow Irish musician, Donagh Long, and earlier recorded in the 90s by the celebrated Trio of Emmylou, Dolly and Linda.

Hopefully this is the last Cinco De Mayo I will also ever have to refer to as "F**k You Donald Trump" Day--but nevertheless, in honor of those of Mexican descent and the 1862 Battle of Puebla that gave the holiday its name, here's a four-song set for today:
The Highwomen--"Wheels Of Laredo":
Alice Wallace--"Desert Rose" (about the Mexican migrant experience; from her 2019 album Into The Blue):
Linda Ronstadt--"Adonde Voy" (from her 1993 album Winter Light):
Flor De Toloache--"La Cigarra" (from last year's Kennedy Center Honors ceremony, where Linda was honored):

A hugely interesting Christmas CD from 1993, featuring the Minnesota-based VocalEssence Ensemble and Singers led by Phillip Brunelle. It features various composers' arrangements of very traditional Christmas carols, and also a work by the late American composer Conrad Susa (who passed away in November 2013) called Carols And Lullabies: Christmas In The Southwest, which adapts numerous Hispanic carols of the season that are familiar to those who grew up in that part of the world in that ethnic setting. The music features harp, marimba, strings, indigenous percussion instruments, and Spanish/classical guitar.

On this day, we celebrate the life and the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, a man who really sought to make America great for all of us.
And here's how I am doing it musically this year--the Piano Concerto of the African-American composer George Walker, in a 1975 recording featuring Natalie Hinderas at the piano, and the Detroit Symphony orchestra conducted by Paul Freeman.

A very fascinating work by the American composer John Downey from 1978, a fantasy for bassoon and orchestra entitled "The Edge Of Space". Robert Thompson is the bassoon soloist, with the London Symphony Orchestra led here by Geoffrey Simon:

Finally, for the first time in six years, I can actually call today "Cinco De Mayo", instead of also "F**k You, Donald Trump Day". So in honor of this:
"Mexico"--Bob Moore and his Orchestra (#7 hit in October 1961) (written by Boudleux Bryant):
And for some authentic Mariachi Madness, here is Linda Ronstadt with the Mariachi Vargas on "La Charreada", a track from her 1987 album Canciones De Mi Padre, still the biggest-selling foreign-language album by an American artist ever:

An assemblage of music composed and conducted by John Williams for a 1971 British/American made-for-TV adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's classic novel Jane Eyre, which starred Susannah York and George C. Scott:
A suite from legendary Hollywood film composer Alfred Newman's score for the 1963 all-star Western epic HOW THE WEST WAS WON, featuring the Ken Darby Singers, and Debbie Reynolds (one of the film's gazillion stars) doing "Raise A Ruckus":

Thought about the time I found the CYH deluxe CD/DVD at a garage sale years ago, and it made me want to revisit both of their albums. They seem to age like fine wine. I can't believe it's been over a decade since their first album was released.

As this past Saturday marked the 75th birthday (YIPE!!) of Steven Spielberg, I had a triple play of music from his films:
"Tonight", from his take on WEST SIDE STORY, as performed (really!) by the film's Tony and Maria, to wit Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler, with the New York Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel:
"Glienicke Bridge", composed and conducted by Thomas Newman, from Spielberg's 2015 Cold War drama BRIDGE OF SPIES:
"The Court's Decision/End Titles", composed and conducted by John Williams, from the 2017 political drama THE POST:

The soundtrack to Steven Spielberg's 2021 re-imagining of WEST SIDE STORY, with the music of Leonard Bernstein and the lyrics of Stephen Sondheim given vivid new arrangements by David Newman, with the New York Philharmonic and members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted here by Gustavo Dudamel. Featured here are the main cast members, including Ariana DuBose ("America"), Rita Moreno ("Somewhere"), Ansel Elgort ("Maria"), and no less than Maria herself, the scarifyingly beautiful-sounding Rachel Zegler ("Tonight" [with Elgort]; and "I Feel Pretty").

Rachel Zegler (whose luminous performance as Maria in director Steven Spielberg's 2021 reimagining of West Side Story was one for the ages [IMHO]) is about to star as itinerant folk singer and Hunger Games heroine Lucy Gray Baird in The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes; and here she is, doing an uncanny 1960's Joan Baez soundalike on a song from that film, "The Hanging Tree":
