I've just been listening to some of Jerry Douglas's new CD "Glide" Progessive dobro music - most tracks are instrumental, of course - but excellent and repaying detailed listening. (For anyone not familiar with the idea of Progressive Newgrass, I suppose the closest analogy would be with jazz)
One "Route Irish" is inspired by the Iraq War. (It may be unexpected to find music without words as an interpretation of a topical theme - but, of course, classical composers work in similar vein).
Two of the tracks are songs, with guest vocalists Travis Tritt and Rodney Crowell. The first, "A Marriage Made in Hollywood" is powerful - exploring the link between drugs and destruction, and the fascination of the media with tragedy. The other "Long Hard Road" is about memories of a childhood poverty and the struggle to find success through music.
All told it's an impressive album, from one of the nominees for "Musician of the Year"

Some all female Trio from Texas. Could be Lantana? They're from the same area that the Chicks started in - but to my ears they sound more Mainstream-focused than the Chicks. www.myspace.com/lantanacountrymusic

My musical tastes are too diverse--but right at the moment, I am listening to the score Ennio Morricone composed for director Sergio Leone's classic 1969 western epic ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. It is one of the great movie scores of all time--and incredibly enough, it was composed and finished by Morricone before Leone even shot so much as a frame of film, so as to allow Leone to to choreograph his characters' movements according to the score when he filmed.

Right now is Little Big Town, Sugarland, a little of the Chicks, and some Lonestar.
I'm hoping to go see Sugarland in concert (again) in November. I think I'm also going to see Lonestar in a couple of days.

i've been listening to a recording titled "A Tribute To Father Damien" . . . it was recorded at St. Francis Church, Kalaupapa, Molokai, Hawaii . . . a compilation of beautiful Hawaiian renderings of "Catholic Liturgical Hymns" sung by a choir of Molokaian Hansen's Disease patients . . . Father Damien served the residents of the island of Molokai who had been consigned there or more accurately "quaranteened" there as victims of leprosy . . . he himself then contracted the disease and lived and died on Molokai with and among those he served . . . it's an impressive recording . . .
