-- Natalie Maines, "Mother" (No. 17): Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines debuts at No. 17 on the Billboard 200 with her first solo album, "Mother," selling 23,000 copies in its first week.
It also bows at No. 4 on Rock Albums -- the highest-charting set from a solo woman since Lana Del Rey's "Paradise" EP also debuted at No. 4 on Dec. 1, 2012.
Dixie Chicks, who have sold more albums than any other female group in the SoundScan era (27.2 million; 1991-present), last released a studio album in 2006 with "Taking the Long Way." The country trio's set debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has sold 2.5 million to date.
While it's been a spell since the group last dropped a new album, its members have been busy with side projects. The other two-thirds the group -- Emily Robison and Martie Maguire -- formed Court Yard Hounds and released its self-titled debut on Columbia Records in 2010 (No. 7 debut and peak; 61,000). The duo's second album is due later this year.
Dixie Chicks also have a smattering of concerts lined up this year -- their first since 2010. They'll play the KLRU All-Star Celebration Benefit Concert on May 16 in Austin, Texas, and then head to Canada for four festival dates starting on July 6 in Ottawa.

I suspect that even if they released a Dixie Chicks album this season that it would not fare much better. But that's for the #'s. I think people lose interest or forget of them. But I have also randomly read people elsewhere boast how they miss the sounds of them. They swept those Grammys and pretty much faded away. So this in turn reflects on their side projects too. The Hounds upcoming release will be an interesting further indicator. They have all the everlasting respect of musicians and certain crowds. But the public eye generally sways away.

What? A new Dixie Chicks record would have been marketed for a #1.

Unless it had a phenomenal single getting radio play before the album release, I say it'd pull a 3 at best. That considering there are also other names releasing to compete against at the time.

Yeah, really. Yknow it seems like since everything is SO digital now I guess I don't get how an album sells as well or is any indication of success while so many people not as faithful will go and purchase single track downloads instead.

She only sold 10,000 this week. Looks like she won't even see what CYH sold on their first week. lol. I guess Howard can berate her for awhile now.

i'm really surprised at how little this CD is selling. She is out there promoting it but she's getting no airplay at all. She'll be lucky to sell 50K by the time this is done and over with unless she gets a single that catches on.

I am kina not surprised. Thinking on it, she is somewhat like a new artist. Plus, they're cover songs too, primarily.
Even with the Dixie Chicks recognition, I think one could guaranty her success only from merely the Dixie Chicks faithful, fans whom have been without Natalie for....uh....6 years.

Does anyone know how many she has sold all together since the release?

This week she falls to number 57 and has sold about 39K albums. Not good!

Yeah, this is absolutely horrible. Sad really because the album is pretty good. She really needs to get out there with some radio airplay - upbeat songs like Come Cryin or Id Runaway might help.

Yeah, I just don't think people know about it..even people who love her are surprised when I tell them she has an album out. Her website is not as informative and friendly as the CYH website either.. Her website seems amateurish and not as nearly professional. She's basically starting from scratch and since she is juggling DCX concerts and with Ben Harpers schedule and only wanting to do it during the summer..her options seem very low at this point. May be those summer concerts will boost her record sales and know abouts.

I think she needs a hit single and radio play. Really can't picture any of her songs on the bubble gummy hip hop pop stations, around here, other than a mix/hits station. But that may not do much either.

She also needs a cool music video to viral. Most people I think now a days don't even listen to radio as much. With ipods and streaming services it's harder to discover new music unless you pursue it. Having a video that people can share via social networks is a great way. But the video needs to be catchy and an eyefull. No more clips of you recording stuff. Unless, you have a big fan base you need something to pop. It's a visual market even more so now a days. Displays at store, billboards, and pictures pasted on buses. It all costs money though...lots of money.

Maybe she should try performing on tv in a meat suit. Except, do chicken instead.

Just not as many people prefer her type of music. She's famous for Dixie Chicks music... not this bizarre sound she's going for today. She should have started out with that sound if she wanted to sell a lot of records.

Could the fact that it's rather boring be contributing? Just a thought.

I understand your perception Sandra. It is a murky album in spots. It's also a project of covers.
The same 4 CDs on the local Wal-Mart rack when it released are still there. Baffles me.
Nobody's buying it while Free Life could have made radio, or Without You.
I just seen the Hounds at Summerfest on a free stage and very few showed up. Certainly it wasn't promoted much, didn't need it. But many among the thousands of past Dixie Chicks fans could have made an attempt for this show, and didn't. So I think people forgot the Chicks. Dixie Chicks legacy apparently is going to have minimal effect too. Natalie is really on her own.

I don't think they're ever getting back together. From what I've heard of the Hound's second album, it's better than the first one.
